Pre race for me goes like this: Underprepare, then on race day get overly nervous because you realize you hadn't prepared, and on the start gate, rev the *** out of your bike, and off the start miss 3rd gear

mine, stay up way too late getting ready the night before, set my alarm clock since I only gave myself three hours to sleep, jump and stumble out of bed, throw on some clothes and rush to the track, then to realize I left my wallet at home. Rush back home grab my wallet, miss the riders meeting, pull the bike out of the trailer for practice, grab my gascan to top off the tank. I the gas can dribbles out about 8 ounces of fuel, I cuss and yell, but I still have 1/2 tank in my bike, hmm...maybe it will make it through practice I think. Go through practice, & the first race. By this time I've totally forgotten about the 1/2 tank I started off with, so I line up for the second moto, pull a holeshot, lead the first few turns and run out of gas, argh. So I load up and go home, promising myself I will be more organized next time, but that never happens.

Oh, I know it, I always did this, thats why boots have a little bump right on the heal, thats to do your heal shifts. But On a 4 speed bike, I sometimes had to do 1st gear starts, and by the time I got to 3rd, my feet were already on the pegs. And as I remember I went to hit 3rd as I was pinned in 2nd, and my foot totally misses the shifter and argh.
This was supposed to be somewhat funny tho, as that was describing my first race, I know believe I have my act together quite well.

You launch in 2nd, Then as your bringing your foot up on the peg, Use the back of your boot on the way up to click you in 3rd instead of having to get your foot on the peg Then shift, Alot of boots come with a bump out to do this as it saves you alot of time.

I really like this topic, and thought I would revive it.
Really, there is no right or wrong ritual, just as long as you are prepared is what counts. My first race I didn't really prepare much, and I paid for it.
I will be attending a few MX schools this summer one at Red Bud, and I might do one at Dirt MX, but the biggest things about racing is being able to run both Moto's strong and after its all said and done, still having more in you.
I am just starting to get to the point where I can ride 100% race pace for 25 minutes long, and take a 25 minute break and do it again. Things like that really will help you get ahead in a race as you can battle hard the whole time. Now hopefully I can bring my speed up a little bit more
