Thanks for the info. One of the reasons I asked is because I also noticed the inside air filter was always very clean so I have only been cleaning and applying oil to the outer filter.
Thanks again

Great post Dave!! i enjoy reading maintenance threads. pretty in depth but regular maintenace is a MUST as you stress in this post...unproper inspection of all components can end up in fatal engine failures. so...yes properly cleaning oiling & reinstalling your air filter is very important..i use Uni- air filter cleaner & oil...im sure they all work just as good if u properly do it....but thanks for the thread.

I just wanted to add one little thing. I mix up a batch of No-Toil filter cleaner in a old Costco laundry detergent bucket. I only have one bike so I can use the same cleaner a couple times over a month and just close the lid between cleanings. But of coarse if it starts to get real dirty then I change it out. I just make sure I do a through rinse. And I dry my filters with the filter cage installed to help hold the shape and then I have a clean dry filter for the next weekend. And I love the spray on No-Toil filter oil.

Start a new thread on the issue (it doesn't sound like an air filter issue). You will get better answers that way.

I have a couple questions. First, The person that had my bike before I did didn't use No Toil oil. How do I clean the filter so I can put my No Toil oil on it?
Also, when you are putting oil on a filter, can you re-use the oil that comes out of the filter?
Thanks!

at a bike shop they should have an air filter cleaner, just ask them and they should help you out, it doesn't matter if the guy before you didn't use no toil, I constantly switch from K&N aerosol, to Honda oil in a bottle, and PJ1 aerosol, usually whatever I can grab first, when you pick up a cleaner just follow Daves instructions. And no you never re-use any old oil for anything, ever.

Just use gas or whatever to clean the old oil out, than rinse thoroughly. If you catch the excess in a clean bowl or bag, sure you can use it.
I just work small amounts of oil into the filter until it's saturated, so I dont have to deal with a puddle of oil.
