Hey guys, after much deliberation with me, myself and I, I finally affirmed i would get a four stroke. But then the problem arose of to which brand? Now I am biast and like the honda, what with its twin exhausts and all (no thats not all that appeals to me) but i heard the yzfs are very good to. I know many forum-ers(?) ride yamahas but could i please get an opinion from all parties. The major factor is the time/cost on rebuilds and valves etc. I also trail ride in back country rocky hills, woods and the track occasionally but my mate said i would need a new, lighter flywheel as it would regularly cut out trail riding, whats your view on this?
Thanks for any help, i live in new zealand so it may take a while for me to reply

Are you buying 08? If you are buying an 08, the Yamaha has the Honda beat in Handling, Suspension and reliability. The one thing the Honda has over the Yamaha is the Power. On the 07 and 08 YZ's the Pipe is the only thing that hinders low end, so a simple DRD slip on or MRD exhaust can give you more low end and you have an even more usable RPM range then the CRF.
The CRF's I rode reved out way to quickly. From the few times I have ridden friends YZ250f's and my YZ250f, I can hold it pinned and shift through the gears and it keeps pulling and pulling...I hardly ever find the rev limiter. However on the honda it seems like I would hit the rev limiter before every shift and it seemed like the rev limiter was set 1,000 RPM's lower.
Some have complained about the YZ's handling for 06 and 07. The 06 and 07 YZ's steer with the rear tire and once you aquire to their tastes, they handle just as good as anything out there. Then the CRF's like to steer with the front wheel and I feel the get out of line much quicker. However on the 08 YZ, the handling is much improved and a few buddies have ridden them and say they handle insanely great.
Personally, I would not limit myself to just 1 or two brands...I almost went out and bought a brand new 08 RM-Z250, but found my YZ250f cheap. The KX250F's are a great and reliable bike as well.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am after an 06-07 model maybe a decent 05. Thing is, I am only 14 and i have worked most of my summer holidays for enough money to get one. I want a bike that has the performance and doesn't lose too much between now and next year and thing is, here in new zealand the kawasaki's and suzuki's lose quite a considerable amount more on resale and the ktms are a wee bit dearer than the other brands. And the lighter flywheel? got any more advice?
Also the difference in rebuild prices? And the time between new top end? Was thinking about learning how to do it myself, not too sure.

Any of them. MRD will tailor their pipes for you, bottom to mid, or mid to top. Their pipes are SS, but I like that because they are just as durable, but since the silencer is a few inches shorter, there is no gained weight.
DRD has always made good pipes, and they make great quality, more affordable pipes for the Yamaha's and the seem to work really well.
Im not saying that FMF, Pro Circuit, WB's and all those companies are not good..its that you can get what they offer for much less.
Also, MRD pipes carry a lifetime warrenty, and they have great customer serivce, they are second to none. No, I do not have their pipe on my bike...no, I do not work for them, but yes, if I get a pipe it will be them.

Ya know what...I just checked their site and they don't even have a pipe for the YZ250f yet. They have CRF250/450 and YZ450 pipes, but not the YZ250f. I guess when I looked at pipes I was always looking for my 450 and never noticed that they didnt have a 250f pipe...

If you are limiting yourself to a crf250r or yz250f i would pick the yz. im not being biast because i ride yamahas but its true. the honda has slight more power stock but you dont have to stay stock. the yamahas engine lasts longer as well. the dual pipes on the honda are a complete failure. they will cost a fortune to replace and add weight. you should really look into all 5 brands first though because the 250fs are all very potent racing machines.

the fly wheel weight is best left stock. it is set up so every type of riding can be done. DO NOT take weight off the fly wheel for trail riding. you add weight to slow the engine down and keep it from stalling but a 4 stroke deosnt like to stall anyhow. you can chug a 4 with ease.
