what year? How do you ride? fast, racing? About every forty hours or so is the norm for a 250 two stroke. When it gets hard to start or running rough start checking on the top end.

Try till it breaks or kicks your ass.

Do you have a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? We have done both but 4 stroke takes longer and costs more.

look for a loud slaping sound, kinda hard to describe but i can be piston slap. Hard starting, running rich, i think. Cant remeber if top end cuse a lean or rich conditon. Fmx is easy on bikes, engine wise. I ride fmx some, and its probably the easiest my bike gets it.

Typically they get harder to start (and easier to kick); and generally feel down on power.  Fouling plugs (when you never did) can be a sign.

Its hard though because this happens gradually and you really don't notice it.

Thats why its good to do one after 40 hours or so and see what it ;looks like.  Then you have an idea how long to go for the next.

I've seen 2-strokes run perfect until the moment they blew! And I've also seen them fall off on the power gradually - a topend failure is unpredictable.

Personally, I inspect my topends every 20 hours.  It's just not worth the risk of a kaboom.  There is absolutely nothing hard about inspecting a topend ona 2-stroke - if you need help, just holler and we'll walk you through it.

I get 'er done with half the strokes!

I am guessing you are talking about the oil plug. Use vise grips and get a new plug when you put it back in.

I gotta agree with skip on this one!  It is simple if you could see it done.  Check out this link:

These guys do all sorts of stuff and video it so you get a better understanding of what's going on.  Remember, these bikes are designed to be torn down so if you have some mechanical ability and tools, you'll save ***

Let us know if you get lost!  Most of us have done it at least once!
