Great! I'll get that needle ordered today you mentioned a seat earlier, is this something that should be replaced as well? and I'm sure there's a gasket involved somewhere in all this.? Thanks for your help. I'll try and find out the jets this evening.

Do you have a shop manual for that bike? If not - then order one. The procedure for changing the float needle, as well as the parts you will need, and everything else you could imagine, is in there...
Since when is Dirt blue??!!!

Yes, we have the manual. I'll break it out when I get home. I'll get back to you on the jets. Thanks for your help.

yz4me: yeah I hear ya on that one buddy...another thing that bothers me to no end and a buddy "mechanic" friend does this alot is instead of fixing something with new parts or proper replacement he "mcgivers" it back together and people are paying for this stuff I mean come on really do it right or dont do it>>>
speaking of mcgivers i heard of a MORON using silicone instead of gaskets

take a real good look at the rod bearing (big end/lower) as well, the last bike i saw that was tearing up pistons like that had a lower end bearing coming apart. the bearing shards were pitting the piston and head. (the shards come up through the transfer ports) better safe than sorry.

Great, thanks for the tip. I've got a carb rebuild kit ordered, it'll be here in a couple days - along with a spare piston, just in case. I'll check back again before we tear into this thing to see if anyone else has any other suggestions. Thanks.

like skip mentioned your manual will become your best friend another great site is bikebandit.com it has all the schematics for pretty much everybike available free for you to perouse and print off and keep in the shop (also very handy) the carb rebuild is pretty simple just take your time and make sure you keep it clean and you wont have any issues.

FOUND IT! a small piece of plastic probably from the gas tank (yes, we now have an in fuel filter) was keeping the float bowl from going to the top. Therefore the whole piston becoming to hot during starting - totally correct. The gas was always on. Rebuilding and lots of tweeking did the trick. Only problem now is when the bike is being raced, in the 4-5 lap it started bogging out, very little throttle response, bike cools, no problem. Stunk to be in 3rd place into the last 2 laps then go back to 7th cuz of throttling problems. Thanks again for your help. Let me know if you have any suggestions on the throttling issue.

Bring it back and tell Moron to adjust the float properly. Another option would be to sell it afterwords and buy your son something that doesn't sound like a rolling mosquito! Try a Kawasaki.

What does the plug look like when you pull it? Does it seem to be running too hot?
The comment that it runs better after its cooled down is what makes me ask.

Oh MY What We've Been Through With This Bike!!! It's almost become a challange, we can't let it win, it WILL run 1 good race before season ends! The bike starts and runs great, you get into a race and somewhere at the end of the 3rd lap or later depending on how hot the day is, it boggs like a son of a gun getting back into the throttle. It seems to be heating up, we've gone the vapor lock route, taking out the fuel filter completely cleaned the carb and petcock, installed all new fuel lines and replaced the gas cap and It's been completely rejetted! We even replaced the clutch plates and clutch basket cuz someone said worn clutches cause engine heat. The last thing we've done is replace the float needle. The aftermarket needle that came with the bike is a little longer than the stock one and it had a rubber tip. We replaced it with an all metal stock one but haven't had a chance to run the bike good. That's the main problem, you can work on the bike, it starts and runs great, you can run it up and down clear the pipe all is well, it's when you give it the good pounding in a race that it screws up EVERY SINGLE TIME! Any suggestions??

i like how everyone bashes on this mechanic when he taps on the carb. usually, this will fix the problem.. if it is a stuck float bowl, so stop doubting his intelligence. i'm sure he knows more about mechanics than all you guys on this "forum" board. take your carb out, jet it properly, the reason why gas is coming from your carb is probably because there's a tiny piece of dirt holding the float needle. clean it all and you'll be fixed.
