4-strokes are less of a pain. but it depends on what type you buy. i had a crf230 (trail bike) and maintainance on that was next to nothing and it ran like a champ. i now have a kx250f (race bike) maintainance is much more intense and demanding.
whats your size and weight? that will determine whats a good size. also how much are you willing to spend on a begginer bike?

Nothing lasts forever ![]()
A 4-stroke built for trail riding will last a long, long time and need very little maintenance. But a 4-stroke MX bike built for racing will need valves adjusted frequently and will need a topend from time to time.
2 strokes never need valves adjusted, and when you need to rebuild the topend, it is both fairly cheap and pretty easy to do.
From a cost standpoint, the 2-stroke is cheaper to maintain. From a complexity standpoint, a 2-stroke is easier to maintain. From a frequency standpoint, a 2-stroke requires maintenance less frequently.
The WR250 lasts a long, long time. If you stay on top of oil/filter changes, check the valves every 25 hours or so, and keep the air filter clean, it should go for 200+ hours. Same goes for the Honda. A YZ125 can go 40 hours on one piston and ring, if it's not being raced. Change the tranny oil and keep the filter serviced, and you can basically run the bike for years and years - only taking time at the end of each season to put a piston and ring in it. The YZ250 is a beast. In my opinion - and I've been riding/maintaing/building bikes for over 20 years, the modern YZ250 is the finest bike ever made. The engine is tuned to near perfection, it's as durable as a brick, and the chassis is wonderful. It's a great track bike, a great trail bike, a great whatever-you-need-it-to-be bike. All a YZ250 will ask of a beginner is to let it warm up before riding, feed it good quality premix oil at 32:1 ratio, change the tranny oil every 3-5 rides, and keep the airfilter clean. I've seen these bikes go over 100 hours on one ring and piston (but by all means, check them every 40 hours to be sure). When the piston and ring finally do wear out, it costs less than $150 in parts to rebuild the topend and you can do it inside a few ours in your garage with pretty basic tools.
To be completely frank with you, though - as a beginner you probably won't wear out the 2 stroke or the 4-stroke.. so pick the bike that strikes your fancy!

I wouldn't buy a fourstroke MX bike that old. It could be ripe for a meltdown.

They were great and durable bikes, but it's of the right age for a KABOOM if it wasn't properly maintained..

No the same engine as the WR - not by a long shot. Different head, valves, cam, piston, etc...

the race bike (YZ-F) has totaly different gears (gonna change the amount of torque), lighter frame, no kickstand or lights which are very nice on long tree infested trail rides. the yzf is gonna have alot more bite also, whilst the wr-f is going to be a user friendly, convenience bike.

definitely the wr. if yamaha is what your dead set on wr. but i've heard the crf-x has i bit more performance and that the wr needs some after market parts to shine like the crf-x does.

What I recommend depends on what kind of riding you are planning on doing. If you will be riding MX tracks get a MX bike and deal with the extra maintenace. If you will be riding the trails get a trail bike and enjoy the longetivity of a detuned bike.
