Listen to Bill!
And for the record, if you are buying used then I DEFINITELY endorse the YZ250 as top option.... even if the topend is toast, you can make it like new for $150 and it's easy as pie to maintain.

i suggest perhaps going to a dealer, or going to different individual sellers and trying out different bikes. You decide on what YOU want, I have owned both, 2 and 4. and i finally settled on a 2. but thats just me. you have to make these decisions on what you feel is right. i'd try dealers, they are insured and if you dump it you dont have to buy it lol (ussually)

I recommend any 2 stroke MX bike. Not just the YZs.

The topend on a 250F (four stroke) is just a little more expensive than the topend on a 2-stroke. However, if a 4-stroke blows a motor, it costs thousands to rebuild, whereas a 2-stroke costs hundreds.
By detuned, we mean the bike is engineered to produce less power - which relates to longer life and extended service intervals. If you buy a detuned bike - like a WR250F, and 'tune it up' to make more power, then you are defeating the purpose, as your efforts will result in a bike that requires more maintenance - which is exactly what you were trying to avoid!

No! Not crap. Race engines are very high strung. That is why they need maint. more often. When I say detuned I mean the engine is not set up to the max. It is still a good engine, and the smoother mellower power is very welcome on the snotty slippery trails, and in the tight trees. It will be easier to handle, and it won't wear you out letting you ride it for longer periods between rests. The WR comes with a lot of built in hopups. Just a few canges and removals opens up the engine. A CRFX is just as good and doesn't require the changes.

Both are great trail bikes. The WR comes restricted in it's stock form. A rev limiter, restrictive exhaust, choked aibox, throttle stop, and lean jetting can be fixed cheaply or for free. Then the bike can keep pace with the CRFX. Why are you stuck on the '04 models? Newr ones can be had for a little more money and if the bike is in better condition the extra money can save you in the long run.

Where is all this maintance comming from. My 4 banger never needs anything. Change the oil every 4 hours and a new air filter once a day and she keeps on going. To tell the truth Iv only done the valves 2 times in my 450 and I have over 220 hours now. I did the top end because I wanted a high compression piston. That was the only reason. Even 4 stroke motocross bikes last forever. I went 14 months without doing a valve job on my bike. I bought it in 06 while the 07 were just barely comming out. Trust me 4 stroke mx bikes last a lifetime if you do the oil and air filter.

I paid 140 bucks for my Wiseco 13:5:1 full piston setup. Rings, circlip, wristpin everything. 4 strokes are not expensive.

Kzakstro, Newer the better.
Yama97 450s are lasting a lot longer because only 2 people on this earth can push them like a 250. I bet you are hardly ever reving your bike past halfway. Kepping the bike in the low revs will help it last longer. While everyone else can easily find the limits of a 250 fourbanger.
Those 2 people have the initials RC and JS.
