Well seeings as I've been Whalen the snot outta my "F" I thought I would show it a little luv and drop a piston in her.

A little history about the bike is that I bought it a year ago from a friend who rode it frequently and never did more than air filter and oil changes (on time though. He is responsible like that and that's why I bought it.).
I rode it all last year and very often right up until today.

My pics are not step by step, but u will get the idea.

Keep in mind when I got the bike I added an exhaust cam with auto-decompression to get rid of the starting drill. And I have since shimmed my valves once.

As u can see my dog Angel will be monitoring the rebuild and correcting any of my mistakes. (she's quite the watchdog!)

My first pic shows it down to the jug.

Pic #2 shows the best way to organize. Clean bench, clean pig mat, this will help with reassembly. Notice the cardboard where i put the valve buckets. in each bucket is its shim. These need to go back on the valve they were taken from or the valve clearance will be off and I would have to start over.

One way to check how the cylinder has been doing is by checking the ring end gap. here I've taken the top piston ring off and by using the piston i pushed it into the cylinder and with a feeler gage i check the gap between the ends.
do this in a couple spots and make sure the ring is perpendicular to the cylinder wall.
I will do it again with the new ring before I install them on the piston. A specific ring end gap is necessary.

The gap here is .013
I'll be putting in a new wiesco piston and rings with a new wrist pin.

The plan is to check the condition of the valves tomorrow and install new valve seals if all looks good.

So far everything is looking amazingly tight
And i am very impressed knowing how hard i ride this bike.

More to come.

Ok, back to the thread. I checked out the crank and it seems to have seen a little heat but I can't feel any up and down play in the rod so I'm gonna go with it. The plan is to get her through the season and maybe do a little ice racing with it this winter (hopefully). And give the 2 stroke a little break.

Wow! Colored goldfish, you really go all out when you throw a party.

Hill climbing trophies?

What kind of sled do you have?

Is there any chips left? I'm gettin hungry looking at all the snacks.

When I lived in Minn., I had an old chitbox polaris. I think it was a 250.

Back in the day, 440's were the chit! My grandpa had a John Deere, I think it was a 440.

I have not been on one since 81-82, I cant imagine the power they have now.

Mapleleaf, pardon the stick-up, just let me know, if you need any help.
