I have been looking at getting a dirt bike recently. I don't have much experience as I have only ridden a few times. I see a lot of 250 2 strokes for around 1000-1500. They are all in the year range of 95-02. Is there anything wrong with getting an older 2 stroke? Also, would this be too much power for a newer rider like myself? I am 6'1" 185lbs. Thanks.

absolutely nothing wrong with getting an older 2-stroke. i have a 2002 yz 125 and i love it so much. i'd suggest getting a newer year though, like the 02's.. i'm sure you can find a 2002 250 pretty cheap.

kzak people dont outgrow 125's. you are a beginner so just watch everything you say. your presence on this site is apreciated but all im saying is hang around and watch some threads and then when you learn more then start giving advice. you cant just go tell everyone to not get a four stroke and to get a 250.
a 250 is a very powerful bike. i normally suggest people to start on a 125, they are very powerful also but you wont go mach 3. if you think you can handle then go ahead and get one.
i would try and find the newest but still best condition bike. if there is a 95 model and there isnt a spot of dirt on it then go ahead and get it. so all i am saying is that it doesnt matter about the year that much but i would at least try and make it a 98 or newer model.

Thank you very much for the advice. I think I might try to find a 125 as I can always sell it and find a 250 if I feel like going mach 3. Something like this maybe. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/mcy/748825044.html What do ya think?

its cool the thing is though you cant just say man get a 250. this person could be 13 years old. now wat if you would have told a 13 year old to get a 250 and they got hurt. then ow would you feel.
it would be much better for a begginner to ride a 125 and yeah he is a little big for a 125 but if he feels that he could use more power after a year of riding then he could always sell it and get a 250

its an 03 so it is fairly new. not everyone can afford a newer bike like you (kzak) and 1500 is really extremely good. my bike is an 98 and i have it going for 1300.

well he bought it for 2400 off a pro racer last year then he blew it up the first week he had it and put a full wiseco engine on his bike which cost him like 1200 to 1700 somewhere around there so he is trying to get the money to get a brand new bike
