YZ 125 problems, wont idol, hard start, wont hit powerband

I bought my 2001 yz 125 yesterday and it was running great yesterday.

But today, just 10 minutes ago, i tried to go out and ride it and i have some problems.


It is hard to start. and when it does start it will not idol.
It idoled for about 2 minutes first start but then cut off by itself.

After that it was a paint to start.
I thought i might be running the gas/oil too rich.

(32/1 by the way)

so splashed some more gas in there and it helped a tiny

i got it running and it stalled all the other times i tried to go, but this time it went, ( i had to give it ALOT of throttle)

i noticed when i was going that it wouldnt hit its powerband.

when i was  just about to go into the powerband, it bogged and wouldnt go into it.

ok so i tried it in 2nd gear....same response.

it was bogging down alot and i didnt feel safe riding it, because something is wrong. so i took it in the garage and here i am.

also when i give it throttle it doesnt sound as high pitched, it just isnt right.

How does the sparkplug look?Try to get it runnin then cut it off when it gets hot take the spark plug out and there should be a nice gold light brown color.Could be topend, sparkplug or jetting but probably topend or jetting.

ok thanks ill try it, it couldnt be the top end i dont think because when i bought it the guy just got a fresh top end.
idk about jetting, the pipe is stock so he wouldnt have needed to change the jetting.

or does the jetting change over time?

the guy just had his bike sitting.




you know i bet im oil fouling spark plugs, when i take it out, and let it sit, and when i put it back in will it work like a new one?

Alright get some new spark plugs. (br9eg)You can go to advance auto parts and tell them the spark plug and they will get it in in a couple days.(get about three)Mix your gas at 40:1(use bel ray H1R or Yamalube 2R).Put new spark plug in.If it fouls you have a jetting problem.What oil have you been using?

sorry late response i was riding my ttr.

but im using AMSOIL dominator synthetic two stroke oil.

the guy i bought it from was using a belray S2 two stroke oil.

he ran his a little richer than 32:1

do you think if i just add some more gas it should help right now, i want to ride that beast

Don't use ANY amsoil.It sucks!If you want to go ride tho pout more gas(without oil) in the gas tank and shake the bike real well so that it mixes.But do what i said sometime soon and don't forget to tell me how the spark plug looks.Where is that free dirtbike track?

You know there is a yamaha dealer in wake forest and you can spend $7 on yamalube instead of H1R that is $17.

Do you have a owners or service manual? You should try adjusting the idle and air screw. The YZ is not going to take off like your ttr. You will have to feather clutch and gas it on your takeoff, and by gas it, I dont mean wot. The YZ will not be a smooth roll on of power like the ttr.

yea chud, i found i had to kinda feather it, unstable throttle on the way out, im trying to find this guys number dang im having a hard time finding his card.

im going to find out how to take off the gas tank.
