They can idle fine; the reason most full on racing bikes are set not to idle is to help initial throttle response and it can make low end jetting crisper; but it does not hurt anything for them to idle. Its a personal choice. If not racing at a top level most prefer it to idle for about 30 seconds or so to prevent stalling easily.

YZriderr: I bought my 2001 yz 125 yesterday and it was running great yesterday.
But today, just 10 minutes ago, i tried to go out and ride it and i have some problems.
It is hard to start. and when it does start it will not idol. It idoled for about 2 minutes first start but then cut off by itself.
After that it was a paint to start. I thought i might be running the gas/oil too rich.
(32/1 by the way)
so splashed some more gas in there and it helped a tiny
i got it running and it stalled all the other times i tried to go, but this time it went, ( i had to give it ALOT of throttle)
i noticed when i was going that it wouldnt hit its powerband.
when i was just about to go into the powerband, it bogged and wouldnt go into it.
ok so i tried it in 2nd gear....same response.
it was bogging down alot and i didnt feel safe riding it, because something is wrong. so i took it in the garage and here i am.

Especially since you are new to it, you may have just loaded up the spark plug and fouled it. You may want to get a few extra ones while learning.
Be very careful putting extra gas in with no oil; if you get too much straight gas you can seize the motor!
Also, its just me but unless the guy showed you recipts for the top end I always take that with a grain of salt. It seems all used bikes "have fresh top end...".
But since yours was running fine I am leaning towards a fouled plug.

New plug. And better starting techniqe. And a 2 min idle is ALOT. Be happy lol.

lol k woods,
ill go pick up some plugs like 2 or 3. But yes the day i went to see it first time ever i rode it the power band was crazy.
im very confused about changing spark plugs though. i pulled mine out earlier today and when it came off there was this "bic" pen tip looking thing (like what a bic pen tip looks like)
and so i was confused

well your starting the bike wrong. the most the bike should idle is 10 seconds. start the bike with choke then turn it off once the bike sounds right which is normally about 3 seconds. i am guessing that you are carbon fouling your plugs because of letting it idle for 2 mins. put a new plug in and do some holeshots in a field or something for like 15 mins because the bike is going to be loaded up that is why it sounds the way you are talking about. you have the bike loaded up with carbon from idleing. just let it run wide open in a field or something like that to get clean out the carbon that is built up.

if u still cant get it, try tightenin the nuts on the outside of the cylinder wall. there should be 4.
also try tightenin the headnuts, theyre right next to the spark plug. my bike was acting in a similar way after i rebuilt the top end. then i did that and it worked again.
