As soon as the front wheel comes off the lip of the jump you can let off the gas. Video tape yourself to see how you are jumping.

you are crazy kid. if you let off the throttle like that you will do a nose dive.
stand up and put yourself in an attack position. head over handle bars. elbows sqaure. knees bent. and hold the throttle all the way through. 40 feet is not a lot. practice 80 foot table tops because you dont have to worry about under shooting it so that when you are faced with a 40 foot double it will be easy to do.

yeah letting off the gas is not smart, you will nosedive no matter what you do, and you dont have to videotape yourself, the way you feel will tell you how your jumping and so will the way you land

I always let off the gas in the air and I never eever had a nose dive.
Putting an FMF on a Kawasaki is like putting Mayo on a PB and J sammi.

key word in the air. once both wheels are off the ground then you can get off the throttle. anothere thing dont ever touch the front brake while you are in the air. you want the both wheels to be spinning when you hit the ground. some people hit the rear brake while they are in the air to drop the rear wheel wheel down but you have much more control if you use your body weight to control the bike in the air.

Well. as i think elko said. once both tires are off the jump you can relax on the throttle. you can then use it to level you out. if you start to do a noser. But. i have seen., and i have done way to many of hte let off gas to early. and nosed it. I would rather land on my back end hten my face anyway. its all about timing. and how you feel personally. i think the biggest thing you can do. is start small, dont let people pressure you into things to fast. and stop and take a break when you start to feel uncomfortable because its always that last jump you think you can handle that sends you to the hospital. ~pat

there is one thing that you cant do. watch someone jump. you cannot tell what the hell they are doing and all you are going to do is pickup on there bad habits and learn them and their technique might work for them but not work for you.
do what i said in my first post and you will teach yourself how to jump.

one thing no one mentioned is 4 strokes. when you come off the face on a 4 stroke you have to stay on the throttle more then a 2 stroke or your engine braking will make you nose dive.

yeah, ill have to disagree with elko, when you hit the back brake you nosedive, thats why when they do a backflip they stay in the the throttle, and you hear a "panic rev" when someoen nose dives or underrotates

no hitting the rear brake makes the rear end fall down. but when people go into a nose they hit the throttle because they get scared shitless and they think hitting the throttle is going to help but there is nothing that will save you from a nosedive. once that front wheel gets to a certain point there is no saving it except to jump off.
if you see someone rear wheel drop too far down they will also do a panic rev. it doesnt matter what situation you are in. if you know something is wrong then almost 100% of the time you will do a panic rev no matter what the situation is. it doesont help except if your doing a backflip.
i jump and i know this from experience not from watching other people jump.
if you do what i said. you will almost never wreck and use your body weight to control the bike in the air. dont think about hitting the clutch or any of the brakes. the only thing you need to think about is staying centered on the bike while its in the air and think ahead of you.

Actually, Panic revving has saved me many times from a horrific endo. Revving the gas will indeed bring the front end up.
I also break tap all the time to change the pitch in the air. Brake tapping does bring the front end down quite a -bit
Usually you want to stay smooth with the throttle all the way through the jump face while you are learning. When you start to get faster you will learn to leave the face WFO or even sometime with the gas completly shut-off.
Riding is the way to learn, there really is not right or wrong technique to learning. Just go out and experiment.
Remember, start small.

Elko reving in the air will make your rear tire go down not up. Tapping the rear brake will bring your nose down. I was watching a video of Chad Reed and he would ome off of some jumps with his nose to far down he would rev hard and you can hear it and he would level out very quickly. The video is on www.thor.com if you wanna watch it
