as some of you guys know, (ive been complaining about it for about a month)  my bikes transmition leaks oil somewhere.  and i took it in to get looked at.  the guy replaced a seal but that did nothing.  now hes saying that its the counter shaft thats makin the leak.  do you guys think that that could be it?  or maybe, is there something thats cheaper that could be causing the leak?     so far this repair for parts and labor is around 500 bucks.

Is it leaking into your crank and making your bike smoke and push oil out the exaust?
If so its your crank seal...i just went through this...cheap to fix your self...but a pain..i guessing that is the seal he changed? i wish i could help more truth is i am interested to see your outcome because i am scared my bike will do the same....maybe the center case gasket is what i am thinking....hope not for both our sakes!

no the machanic said that the counter shaft could be bent.  the leak is transmition oil leaking out of the shaft where the front sproket is.  its an external leak.  so its quite expensive to fix

have you already changed the seal??
does the countershaft sprocket wobble when you spin it??

I doubt that is whats doing it. How the heck do you bend your counter shaft? it would require an impact of some sort directly to your front sprocket would it not? I imagine you would notice if something shot through your keg and trashed the sprocket lol. Perhaps he dubbed up teh seal, or maybe the casing has a dent in it. either way, a lot of blue rtv silicon and some gasket material in a tube, some luck and a lot of duct tape and gorrila glue will fix anything. do it like mcgiver    o and what bike is this? ~pat

well actually there was an impact to it.  i was ridin in the winter and my chain fell off and got jammed between the front sproket and the chain.  im sure that could have bent the shaft or craked the case

well i was just going around a corner, but it was in the snow so i have no idea how fast the tire was spinning.  i would say top end of 1st gear.  and ya, i noticed the leak but not right after, maybe a couple months after on memorial day weekend.  maybe it could be a crack and it got bigger, or maybe just a bering

not familiar with your bike did you say which it was? I wouldn't sya it was the chain that did it. to break your casing it takes quite a bit. i've only seen it happening when the person was going over 30. bearing seems possible. there should be quite a large one right behind the shaft there.~pat

I've seen a thrown chain break a case, so it may well have damaged the countershaft (it doesn't have to be be bent much to cause a leak.)

could also be pitted (depending on year) I replaced a pitted shaft on a Kawi not to long agon and then a shifter shaft on a Yamaha just a few weeks ago...for one reason or another they were both pitted and leaking around the seal so I replaced both shafts and seals and life was good again...

clean the bike really well like spotless around that area the let the bike idle for 5-10 mins get the oil really hot the with it off just tip the bike to the sproket side (I use a strap I have one end fastened to my shop wall and let it tip using the strap) and watch for the drips this will tell you where its leaking for sure then at least you have an idea what your up against...
