Jetting controls the ratio of air to fuel going into your engine.
Jetting is changed by replacing or adjusting 'jets' in your carburetor.

For idle to 1/4 throttle: the small pilot jet is controlling the mixture.  To make it leaner (less gas), use a lower number pilot jet.  To make it richer, use a higher number jet.

For 1/4 to 3/4 throttle: the jet needle is controlling the micture.  To make it richer, lower the clip on the needle.  To make it leaner, raise the clip on the needle.

For 3/4 to full throttle:  The main jet controls the mixture.  The larger the number on the main jet, the richer it is.

BUUUHHHH  sound (sucking for air) and surging are signs of a lean mixture.  Breaking up, crackling, misfiring, and fouled plugs/smoke are the signs of a rich mixture.

The it's running rich - as we suspected
So go to the 45 pilot jet and drop the jet needle to the 2nd clip...

OK - good man!  You're well on your way to getting this bike running as it should.

The next thing you should do is to get a Service Manual for your bike, if you don't have one.  With the Service Manual in hand, this job will be a piece of cake, and you won't break anything along the way

Popped your jetting cherry, eh Chud?
The 1st time is always so special...

LOL!

But seriously... since I wore a keyboard out with you and your infamous CR, please take a moment and enlighten these fine gentlemen about the meaning and cause of the sound you just heard..

Well Mr smarty pants, the hollow tinny engine crackle is caused from a lean circuit. I just dont know if it is the pilot or the needle. The bike was leaning sharply to the left when it occured and I was unable to duplicate the sound, but once again, there is some slight blistering on the edge of the electrode.

Fck if I know Skip, maybe the airscrew was too far out, maybe I need 1/2 clip richer needle.

I think I turned too far for off-idle perfection. Just had the ever so slightest rough spot I was trying to clear up.

LOL - ok, i deserved that one Chud!

If I had to guess, I'd say the clip is a half-step lean. You can take that carb apart in your sleep now, so it will be easy to confirm.

ok, i bought all this stuff and i took the old stuff up to the shop to get a 2nd opinn, damnit!, they said it wass all fine, its my jetting, so back i go tommorow to get my money back and call my buddie and get some jetting done, but like you said skip, it didnt cost othing, his dad rejetted my dads harley and it pulls like a raped ape now, lol, so im glad to know at heart its not the top end, the piston was fine, the guy said that it had the firing spot on it and hardley any carbon on it, why i seen alot idk, must have been the light, wasnt much light when i looked at it, rings are good and cylinder wall, so i guess i learn something by doing it myself huh?, well i guess after this short ordeal is over i get to hit my 8ft freestyle ramp can't wait!!
