82 rm 125 Crank seals

Does anyone happen to know if i have to split the crankcase to change the crank seals...just found out my bottom end seals are leaking oil into my crank case and causing the bike to stall...but i didnt take it apart yet and dont have the book.  I think the answer is yes but hoping for the easy way out...haha

I am gonna tell you before the others get to you. you need a manual. bottum line. Dont even touch teh bike till you have one. That is what the next 30 posts are gonna say lol. But to answer your question, my bike is set up differently, but yes, to change the crank seal, you need to split the cases. And for that, you need a manual. If no manual, take your time, individual parts baggies, labels. timeee, and dont use anything to pry the cases apart. if you have to use anything use wood.

Atkkid is correct, but only in that you should buy a manual before you start poking around in your RM's bottom end.  You actually do not have to split the cases in order to pull out and replace the crankshaft seals. I just replaced the crank seals on my 1986 RM125.  I also replaced the water pump seal, and the countershaft seal. Luckily for me, the bike did not have many hours on the motor, and the crank bearings were still tight.  On these old bikes, anything that is rubber will wither and shrink from age.  If your crank bearings are worn out, then don't even bother with the seals, because new seals will leak if the bearings are worn. A quick and dirty test of the bearings can be done by taking off the ignition cover and trying to move the stator with your hands (up and down, side to side). ANY movement that you can produce with your hands (other than to spin the crank) means the bearings are worn. The seals are tapped in from the outside of the cases on both sides.  The crank bearings are pressed in from the inside of the cases.  Thus, new bearings require the cases to be split.
One last tip: go to onthepiperacing.com and take a look.  They specialize in rebuilding 70's and 80's MXers.  The guy that runs the place is Lee. You can ship your lower end for a rebuild. If your 82 is anything like my 86, then it is worth spending 300.00 or so bucks to get the lower end fixed.

ah man im so stupid...i always jump into this crap uninformed...i really didnt know the crank is supposed to stay dry figured it was supposed to be getting wet to be lubricated....duh mixed fuel...never even dawned on me. i twisted wrench in my day,but always four strokes...i have a book coming, but i already know i have to do alot of not fun crap to get down into the crankcase..grrrr..thanks for the bad news man...lol

Ok ..yah man you just made my day, i was hoping and praying i could do it by way of clutch and stator covers, im pretty sure the bearings are good,checked them for play with new top end, i bought what i thought was the manual online...turned out to be the crappy little one thats in the crate with a new bike (i think).And yah your right they are great bikes, im sure i would do faster laps on this, than the 89cr250 i used to have...so much flickyer..lol. thanx man, im new here this is place rules!

sorry i was confused as to what "seal" he was talking about. i thought he was referring to teh gasket. my bad.~pat

you do not have to but do not pry on seal to remove take a drill bit and drill a hole in the metal part of the seal very carefully then screw in a sheetmetal screw or aggressive thread and use pliers to pull out if real hard drill hole 180 degrees from first hole put another screw in that then alternate pulling you will be good to go had to do mine worked great and if leaking oil into crank and blowing oil or spogging out of exhaust it is right seal left seal will cause bad idiling and lean mixture  
if it doesn't smoke it isn't worth a stroke
