I assume you already tried adjusting the idle curcuit ie the idle screw if so the first thing i would try is cleaning the carb out really good and spray out the pilot jet real good

you may need a new throttle cable or set the throttle cable correctly. or a new spring on the throttle cable.
to me it sounds like after you twist the throttle, the slide inside the carburater is not going all the way back down. so check those 3 things out.

Double check the rubber manifold between carb and cylinder for cracks etc and make sure the carb top is secure. Your symptoms can also be caused by a small air leak some where as well or even too lean pilot jet or air screw setting.

skip i disagree with you on this one. if it was the pilot then wouldnt this problem always be there? but this only happening after the throttle is twisted. so that would mean that your still getting fuel through the pilot but because the slide isnt closeing all the way you are getting extra air past the slide, giving you a high idle.

no. even when i start it up with the chochoke on it idles high for a minute then the rpms just drop until it dies if you dont give it throttle

Elk the only problem with your theory is taht all fourstroke have 2 throttle cables by law. They work in a push-pull relationship because thumpers can create enough vacuum to keep the throotle from closing with just a spring. If the vavle is gummed up it could stop it from fully closing but like the pilot jet it should be affecting all the time not just after twisting the throttle.
I'm still thinking on this problem and will give my full opinion later. Though I keep thinking along the same lines as Dave.
