Hi there, im very new to dirt bike riding, iv ridden about 10 times(02 kx 125), and im about to buy my first bike but im unsure if i should buy a 250 2-stroke or a 240 4-stroke. I will be doing 80% of my riding in the bush, e.g (4x4 tracks, muddy, rocky place) All recreational riding.I just don't want to buy a 2-stroke and be having difficulty getting up hills and getting thrown off on rocky surfaces, i'm not sure if its 2-strokes or its just my riding skills, i also dont want to buy a 4-stroke and get bored with it as it doesn't give me the thrill like a 2-stroke. Is it maybe because when i've been riding its been on a 125 2-stroke and need a 250 2-stroke which has more tourque down low to get me up the rocky terrain, or is it that a 4-stroke are just easier to ride in those terrains (or will i get better with a 2-stroke in time). Please help me, Thanks

i think you should get a 125 2 sroke. you just need practice on it. 2 strokes arent the easiest bikes to ride and it will take a couple time to really understand the power. go fast up the hill. like 2nd gear pinned and you will make it. that is what i mean you just need practice.

thanks for your opinion, its just i hear that people say get a 4 stroke there easier to ride, then i hear is that you need a 250 2-stroke as its got low down power making it easier in rough terrain. any more opinions, thanks in advance

well with a 4 stroke it is easier to ride but i think they are boring to ride. but also dont forget they have more maintence with valves and that kind of stuff and they cost more to maintian and they cost more to get fixed. a 250 2 stroke bike is very powerful and isnt a good bike for a beginner.

Elko is right. 2 strokes just really take a lot of practice, especially on hill climbs. 4 strokes can get boring, but I just rejetted my WR250F with a YZ jet kit. It feels like a different bike all together. I'm no expert by any means but it is something to consider. I'm a small person though so I feel more comfortable on my YZ125. If you have friends with bikes maybe you should go for some test rides and see what you feel most comfortable on.

If you are talking about climbing really steep hills then its much easier to do with a 4 cycle. I shouldn't really say easier but going up steep inclines on a 2 cycle can only be done 1 way. Nail the throttle all the way and don't let off at all otherwise you kill the engine and have to fall over or learn to ride backwards.

Maybe you should get a 450 4 stroke. It will have more power than a 250 4 stroke but will be easier to ride than a 250 2 stroke.

hey if u stop half way up a hill on a 2 stroke u dont always have to fall over or ride backwards u can just turn the bike around and ride it to the bottom and it aint that hard then just try again

From what I have read, the KTM exc models, are as close as you can get, to having the best of both worlds.

Actually the riding backwards comment was a j/k but I was talking about a steep incline where you kill the engine if you let off the throttle. I guess you'd have to see some of the hills i've climbed.
