I just bought this bike yesturday. I bought it and a 1990 cr 125. The bike i am fixing up is the newer one. I dont know what year it because the boy i got it from painted the frame several times so i cant see the #s. How could i tell what year it is? Or can i? And another thing is it was took apart before i got it and their is a little tiny rod the goes up into the side of the head on the right side of the motor and is broken off. What is this? ANd the bike has been setting for awhile. So what all should i do to it to get it running good?

if ou were to scatch the paint off it would be on your steering stem section of your fram on the side then again the engine should also have the vin number the brocken rod your talking about is probably your power valve wich has to do with the exauhst and also if you want it running real good soak the carb in carb cleaner not the arisol can, but the liquid you can get it at any auto place fresh gas oil and plug you may have to tune the carb but i wouldnt touch it if your not familiar
when it rains pull it apart

dude that really sucks. your going to have tear into that bike. that rod needs replaced and you may have to split the cases. it goes to your powervalve.

carb cleaner is bad for seals and gaskets inside the engine so dont go crazy with that stuff. pre-mix at 32:1 with bel ray h1r, honda hp2, or yamalube 2r, clean air filter and put some kind of air filter oil on it. chech all the bearing, wheels, shock, swing arm, linkage system. change tranny oil use an oil like bel ray gear saver or honda hp trans oil SAE 80/85w. dirt bikes are very high maintenance and once a year or every 45 hours the top end and suspension should be rebuilt. chech all the bolts to make sure they are to torque.

clean the bike with a hose and detergent after every ride. chech for loose bolts every once in a while. clean air filter and reoil after every other ride. the air filter is very important and gets dirty quickly and when it gets dirty, dirt can be sucked into the engine and cause premature wear. change tranny oil every 3-5 rides.

that is about the rundown. get a service manual and read the first 3 chapter on maintenance in it.

How hard is it to split the cases? I looked at it today and i beleive you do gotta split the case. Is this Hard? And Also i plan on boreing the bike and it already has a fmf head pipe and silencer. What jets should i use? And another thing is the front shock dont rebound very good? Do i need new seals or is there something else? and if i need new seal how hard are they to change?

The first thing you wanna do before you tear anything apart is get a clymers manual, it'll help immensly. If you pay attention the seals arent hard, splitting the case isnt to bad, but you have to be very organized or stuff will go bad very quickly when you start mixing up and losing parts

Spliting the case is no fun, and as DCM said you better have the manual and be very organized.
Put down a clean white sheet and put everything in order and take some pics for reference or vid the procces if you can to look back .

i dont understand why people say its so easy to split the cases. you need a press to put them back together. it really isnt that easy. and your suspension needs rebuilt. you cant do it yourself. you should send it to one of these people: factory connection, pro circuit, pro action are good. factoryconnection.com

not to be rude but getting it bored will not make you faster, learning how to ride good will make you ride fast. practice. it could probably use a top end rebuild though.

i plan on doing a top end rebuild im just trying to get it ready for after i rebuilt it.....Im thinking about just giveing the motor to someone and paying for them to split it. And why cant you just put new seals in the forks.

like i said you suppose to get them rebuilt every 45 hours. your probably way way over that, and in need of getting them rebuilt. all the seals do is hold the oil inside them and keep dirt out so getting the seals changed will probably do nothing.

people put more importance on the engine but it should be on the suspension. people cant handle the full potential of a 125 as it is but when the susepension starts wearing out you cant feel it but its a major effect on your riding ability.

Get the manual before you split it. I am not sure about your honda but my suzuki does not require a case split to change the powervalve rod. You just have to take the clutch cover off and the cover under it should come off really easily then you will see the valve rod. If you want to get a look at your motor and possible figure out what year it is go to bikebandit.com and pick a year then look at the motor microfiche and you will see what you need and what you need to do. Splitting requires a special tool to pull the two halves apart then you have to have a tool the pulls the crank back into the proper place. I had to take my motor completely apart and its not bad if you have the tools. Good luck.
