Sounds like an awesome trip! My only concern is what you have mentioned; I've heard some pretty good horror stories from trips down south. As long as you have people who know how things work there its likely a good trip.

Yes, my parents don't trust me being Mexico with its current state. Last year we had gone through a military check point on the way in from San Tomas and they made me get out of the truck and searched it. Luckily, they just told us to get back it and have fun.
Lucky yes that it was only the truck they searched. I am happy to stay state side at the moment as well!

I have not been there, but I am aware of Tijuana's reputation. I have a Mexicano friend that says that place is like the Wild Wild West. The place is totally run by drug dealers.

Well driving down there is dangerous in itself - people will run you down, they don't care. We always purchase Mexican insurance before going down there.
I have heard that the toll road(which is the only paved highway along the coast) is very dangerous now to drive on. There is a section of it where there has been many hijackings(they take everyone in the car with them sometimes).
I really don't even know where to start about the dangers in Mexico.
