iv'e heard that going 1 tooth down on the front sprocket is roughly equivalent to adding 4 to the rear.
is this accurate?
i believe i want to add a tooth or 2 to my rear sprocket. if I drop a tooth on the front and 1 0r 2 on the rear is it like adding 2 to the rear?

Yes, adding (or subtracting) one tooth in the front is about equal to adding (or subtracting) 4 at the rear.
At the front you don't want to go too small as its hard on the chain or too large where the chain rubs the sprocket guard or case.
