Help choosing a first bike

Hey guys, I've ridden quads most my life and I just recently decided I wanna get into dirt bikes.

I'm 6'1", 145 lbs. I've ridden a YZ80, a RM 125, and a CRF450. I've never owned a bike and I didn't put a lot of seat time on any of those bikes. Just bikes of my friends and I took a lil test ride. With that being said what bike would fit me best?

I've got my eyes on a 2003 YZ 125 that I saw along the road with a price tag of $1600. My buddy who races motocross and is about to sign on with KTM is gonna go with me to look at it and see if everything is running like it is supposed to since I don't know anything about bikes.

I'll be riding open fields with some hill jumps and in the woods to start out with. I definitely want something for motocross though. My buddy has a nice track and I'd like to be able to hit every jump there once I get good enough. I don't think I'm gonna get into racing but it's too early to tell. I guess I want a bike that can go about anywhere and do about anything.

I was afraid the YZ 125 might be a little cramped for me but my friend said it'd be better to start on a 125 rather than a 250 2 stroke or a 450. He's probably right. What do you guys suggest?

Also, what kind of maintenance should I expect to do if I do buy this YZ 125?

Thanks for all your help.

listen to your friend. and welcome to teh board btw. the yz 125 is an all around great bike. teh seat height is really tall making it perfect for you. i'm almost 6'1" and the bike is mint for the seat height. as for the maintanence. a new top end everyonce and awhile depending on how hard and how long you ride it. i do mine every 2 years apparently lol. its like for your bike a piston kit? what like 120? other then the topend, your gonna have to change the oil, mix some 2 stroke engine oil with your gas every time you fill your gas can. and clean the airfilter. you do that and the bike will last you a veryyyy long time. ~pat

Thanks for the price estimate of the piston kit. That's really what I was looking for. Is that the price of doing it yourself? I'm not a real handy mechanic but I know my friend could do the work for me.

im looking up the exact price now. yeah thats what it costs for just het parts. its not a tricky procedure. so after watching someone do it a time or two you should eb able to do it no problem. a full kit off wiseco for the prolite piston kit is 151.04 cents. im sure you can get it cheaper from anotyher brand but thats just an estimate. you can get fancier versions and not so fancy versions as well. like i said. you watch your buddy do it the first time, and the next you should be able to do it no problem. ~pat

I left to go look at it but the bike was gone. Either it's been sold or the guy selling it was still at work and hadn't put it out yet.

ok pat nailed it almost but i suggest once a year rebuild the top end and suspension. to rebuild a suspension it will need sent to a proffessional suspension place such as factory connection and it will cost a little over 200 dollars, a top end isnt real expensive to do. use oem piston because, yamaha makes 4 different sized pistons and wiseco makes 1. you should measure the cylinder diameter, if it is out of spec then it will need replated by someone like powerseal usa for 200 dollars. now if you want a wiseco piston i suggest getting the cylinder replated by wiseco and they will give you the proper piston that will fit properly.

So I went back after supper thinking maybe the guy works during the day and only sets it out when he's at home. Guess not. It still wasn't out. He probably sold it.

I've been checking Craigslist and my local newspapers but I can't find much. Everything on Craigslist is real far away and I'd rather not travel too much unless a bike really sticks out. Cycletrader.com doesn't seem to have anything in my price range. Unless I'm stupid and can't figure out how to do the "search".

Where do you live? The best thing to do on craigslist is to look at the biggest city near you. And a 125 would be a great bike and pat pretty much summed up the maintenance.

clean air filter every other ride and change tranny oil every 3 to 5 rides and your bike will run strong a long time.

When you say every 3-5 rides how long do you mean?

I've got about 200 acres around my house to ride on so when I go out, I'll probably ride for a half hour and come back home, then head out again later in the day. Would you say it'd be safe to change it every 10-15 hours?

Open class two stroke man, if you survive you'll be a hell of a rider. bahahah Nah I loved my yz 125, just grew up on big bores. The 125s have plenty of haul ass even for a big guy,a dn your pretty light. I'd look for an 04 or newer yz 125. Bikes can be had on good deals, just be at the right place, right time
