you cant. short of getting a new one. if the shaft is stripped. so will the lever. there are things you can do before you get the new one though. while its being shipped or w/e you can drill a hole through the shaft and hte lever, and put a bolt through and tighten it down with a nut. ~pat

I have had this problem on many a bike.  What i usually do it to take a grinder and widen the gap in the shift lever where it mounts to the shaft.  That will allow you to tighten the bole alot more.  It has always worked for me.  hope ths helps

i tried derby's technique and it doesnt work. an aluminum shifter with an aluminum screw doesnt work. usually just snap the screw trying to tighten it down. and if you get this problem on many bikes then that is clear evidence that you need to calm down with the shifting and stop pounding on the shifter. it only needs a light tap to chagne gears.

but pats technique works. and you can talk to a mechanic at a dealer and ask them if the cases need split to change it. if it needs split then use pat's technique. if it doesnt then you can get it fixed real cheap.

btw the part is called the shift shaft or shift rod.

On every bike I have ever owned the shift lever was steel howevere they are all older.  The newest bike I own is an 87.  I collect old bikes and usually by the time I get them they are pretty beat.  I have also had luck putting a bolt that is a bit longer throught the shift lever and puttting a nut on the other side to tighten it more than you normaly could.  But like i said I have never done an aluminum shifter.

i have tried it with longer bolt and a nut and i couldnt get that to work either. its kind of hard to find a steel shift lever now adays. most are aluminum so you dont get problems like this. the aluminum strips easier so just the lever will strip and not the rod. the steel lever with the steel rod are the ones that gets this problem because nothing gives so they both get stripped.

if the shift shaft is dammaged replace it as well as the shifter.
you will not have to split the case, but you will have to remove the case on the right side of the engine, as well as the clutch basket.
