Am I crazy for thinking to change from an 06 WR450 with mods to make it run better than a yzf, to a 250/300 XC-W(e)? I know that a 4 stroke needs twice the displacement for the same power, but am still wavering in my decision. What do you think?

IMO don't do it. I find with Ktm's they get very bad gas mileage. and I just overall don't feel 2 strokes anymore. When I went from a 2 stroke snowmobile to a 4 stroke I loved it and in the Spring when I rode my buddies 4 stroke dirtbike I immediatly got a 4 stroke a month later. 2 strokes are yippy and have little bottom end power then wake up around mid, and 4 strokes are smooth and have plenty of bottom power right to the top. Do whatever you want to do.

Zak makes a good point. It really depends on your application. A 2 stroke does have less bottom end but makes more power. Sprocket and pipe can do wonders to a 2 stroke. And then you have light waight and flickable power and without the over heating and starting and repair issues. It really depends what you want the bike for.

i had an opportunity to see Malcolm Smith this last week riding a 2008 250 xc-w. I didn't ask him what he thought about the machine. i don't think he is in the business of making endorsements. make of it what you will.
