Im new to this site.  Right now im looking at a 97 yamaha yz 250. it runs strong but it will not go into first gear. he wants $750 for it? do you guys think its a good deal? This is what the description exactly says "runs and starts butt will not go into 1st gear, it grinds when you try! you can come and ride it".  

What does the rest of the bike look like?  If it's all good, then that's a great deal.  All you're going to have to do is replace first gear.  Keep in mind this is going to require some mechanical skills and the manual.  If you can do it yourself, well worth the money if the rest of the bike is in good condition and runs strong.  If you could put up a pic of the bike, that would be cool.  

You're not going to want to keep running this bike before you fix it, as yes you can start off in second gear, but there's probably debris in the trans fluid at this point, which can eat up your other gears as well.  So if you buy it, drain it, open it, replace first gear, and you're off to the races after a good lookover and maintenance check.  Used in good condition would still go for a couple K, so up to you.  That's my opinion.  YZWoods

yup, welcome to the board! ask questions as if they were going out of style. and yeah. im with woods. if the rest of the bike looks clean and well kept. if its got signs of fairly regular maintanence, newish tires, its clean, pretty good looking sprocket and chain, and hte only thing thats an issue is the first gear and your willing to dive into the engine a little bit, do it up! ~pat

what exactly do you think is wrong and how much would it cost for parts.

yup thats the part. i tried ebay but gave up as my attention span is really short for some reason right now. and i cant get the pics to work still. just shows a white page. might be my computer this time. and im sure you can get the 1st gear cheaper on ebay. ~pat

i can see your pics now! i was writeing my post when you posted that second sey of codes./ and i can see them now. the bike looks clean. pretty damned clean actually considering its a 97. i also have a 97 and mine only looks that good cause it was like never ridden till i got it. the tires look good. pipe is nice, the chain and sprocket looks ok form what i can see from the pics. it seems like a go for me. ~pat
