atkkid250 : that is the TW200... an old one I think from 2005. My TTR230 is nothing like that , but I at least would like the street legal gear for it.

anyways.... So, about the TTR230 stock and converting it into a Dual Sport (dual purpose bike):

I've been looking at a number of kits.... still looking for advice and comments also from someone has done this before, we can't be the first?

nate450 ::  Hi there and welcome to the forum.
Well, I think we're in the same boat, both wanting to convert the yamaha TTR230 into a dual sport bike, cool!! Mine is a brand new TTR230 2007 that I got a great deal on.

Basically, I've researched a number of kits, which are:

Dakar - looks very cool, has a solid light mount (love that idea) and everything you need in the kit, including keyed ignition, headlight, traillight, 4 signal lights and mechanical brake switches. I would need to pick up a mirror and maybe a mount for the ignition (and tires of course).

Baja Designs - looks to be good quality gear (HOWEVER, their light is held in place with rubber straps, I'm not a fan of that for dual sport) and I don't like the design of their front light much.

TRick Sport - they look to be GREAT quality and advanced stuff with computers for a dashboard etc... HOWEVER, their kit is not available (at least from their website for TTR230). They can do it up for you, but you'd need to get a few mounting parts to be complete.

I would need tires and a dashboard and a mirror with the Baja Designs (which I'm streeing away from) and the Dakar. Dashboard you can get from trick sport as an addon to their kit.

So far I've been leaning towards the Dakar kit actually. Looks to be the most complete, good quality and fits the TTR230 great from what I've read and seen at the local shop, with a solid mounting heard light, nice.

... the research and search for other TTR230 riders who have done this continues.

thanks guys, thanks in advance for more input/comments/questions/concerns.

cheers.

The dakar kit looks pretty good but does it come with the back signal? Where I LOOKED there only seems to be the two front signals.

hi zack: They do come with 4 signal lights (2 front installed on the light, and 2 you install on the tail section plate).

Just looking at this website I didn't find the kit for the TTR230, however, I've seen a kit in person at the local Yamaha shop and the instructions in the kite says it's for the TTR225/230/250.

I'd have to check of course (talk with someone there at Dakar shop) before I order for sure. Also the kit I seen at the local shop had 4 signals.

thanks.

Just got off the phone with Dakar guys and there are some modifications/issues that a shop may have to do, such as the keyed ignition and the kill switch.

hmm.... it's seems to be difficult thus far to find a good kit (with a solid mount head light) and all of that stuff for the TTR230.

I'll keep looking....

thanks.

Does anyone think that the TTR230 gears are going to be an issue while riding on the street?

For example, holding a speed limit (consistent speed and throttle) for an extended period of time using the stock gearing?

thank you.

They say the stock TTR230 battery will be ok with a dual sport conversion kit installed (headlight, tail light, 4 signal light).

I hear and read that the LED lights are a little easier on the battery and shire brighter which is good. I will likely go with the upgraded LED lights instead of the standard ones.

The only other thing I'd like to add, that uses battery power, is a small computer speedometer/odometer with a backlight screen for night travels.

Do you think running LED lights and a small speedometer/odometer computer will be too much for the stock battery?

thank you.
Cheers.

Its a UFO light. It's ok and it does indeed get the job done. However, I will be changing it and likely selling it off once I get my full kit to go Street Legal. - This UFO light has rubber straps that hold it onto the folks. I don't like that idea for dual sport and I'd like an actual mount. So, I'm looking at the Dakar light kit (with horn and signal lights already attached), and it has a mount!

thank you.
