Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to this forum and a newbie to bike ownership but I've ridden friends bikes on occasion for years. Since I've never owned my own, I've never had to worry about maintenance or how they all work. I'm a Wyotech Grad (cars, not bikes) so I do have some mechanical knowledge. Anywayz........

Yesterday, Friday Sept. 5th I went out to the sellers house to test ride this bike. It had been sitting for a few months so it took a second to get it started. He said the float was likely sticking. So after some fooling with it, it started right up. I watched him take off down he street and come back. He handed it over to me and I took off down the street. ran good, no hesitation and sounded good as well. I came back down the street and hit the kill switch so I could see if it started back up on it's own. It fired right up this time and I took it down the street again. Came back to his driveway and hit the kill switch again. I told him that I'll take it. He put some oil in the tank and told me to shake it up to mix the oil. I did. I didn't start it up again after that and we loaded it up and I took it home.

Went out this morning to ride, and couldn't get it to start. Made sure the fuel was in the "on" position, it was. Used the choke. Still no start. I stopped trying and sat there for about 10 minutes. Gave it a kick and it started up for like 8 seconds then bogged to a stall with a whole lot of smoke. None of this happened yesterday and it was less that 12 hours ago. With all the smoke and the fact that he put oil in it makes me wonder if I didn't mix the oil well enough and thats whats causing all the smoke. Took the plug out, looked a little wet. Dried it and put it back in. Same thing. Started for 8 seconds, smoked, then bogged to a stall. Any ideas?

dump the gas and get new gas. use the highest octane gas you can get at the pump. mix it with bel ray h1r, honda hp2, or yamalube 2r premix. it should be mixed at 32:1. dont mix this in the gas tank. i fill up a gas can or jerry can or whatever the hell their called and take that down and put 4 gallons in. you will have to put 16 ounces of oil with that.

It sounds like you fouled out the plug.  Drain the gas tank and put in fresh gas 91-94 octane premixed at 32:1 with a good premix.  BelRay H1R, Yamalube 2R, Hondas own premix will all be good choices.  Get a several new plugs, and use the factory recommended plug (I always have at leat three with me in my box at all times.)

See if that gets the bike running for ya.  If it is running good get it warmed up and ride for a few minutes.  Then pull the spark plug to check how good your jetting is.  The plug should be a nice caramel color, not black (rich) or white (lean).

All of you, thanx so much. U rule

So...drain the gas, put new gas at the highest possible octane with a new mix of oil ( 32:1). And also replace the plug, and while I'm at it, buy several plugs.

So the oil isn't causing the smoke? Do I have to worry about what may be in the carb now? If in fact it is too much oil, or will it burn off? Or does it even work that way? We didn't study 2-stroke engines in school.

Oh, and no, he didn't mention when the last time the top end was rebuilt. Guess I should ask him.

looks good clean the carb also that can always help
well now that the bike is baught he will hopefully give you a honest answer on the last time the top-end was done

but it is always a good idea to tear down the toppend on a used bike and check everything that way you dont have a blow up that costs 800 bucks to fix where previously it would have cost 140 or so dollars for a new top -end

drain the carb. there is a big screw on the bottom of it. clean the air filter. spray it with air filter oil before you put it back on. let it dry first though.

smoke is normal. its from the premix. but when your done doing this stuff ride the bike for half an hour then tell us how the plug looks.

Ok, headin to the shop now, be back in a few hours. When you say smoke is normal do you mean out the tail-pipe? Because this seems to be coming from the engine. It didn't do this at all yesterday. Anywayz... back in a few hours.

it should be coming out the silencer but sometimes it will come out where the engine connects to the exhaust.

you may need a new exhaust seal and some high temp grease (to make a better seal) if it is smoking from where the header connects to the enguine
also the pipe may be bent from previous crshes causing the header not to couple perfectly with the male coupler on the enguine you can take a piece of re bar and stick it in the pipe and bend it back in place if it is bent

I didn't make it to the shop in time. They close at 4 and are not open on Sunday. But the another shop is open on Sunday, so going to hit them up in the morning.

So once a plug is fouled it's no good?

yes, throw it away. i use to use clean them and use them, and i would foul them all the time. i started using brand new ones and my bike ran way better and stopped fouling plugs.
