i had this happen on a xr100 it turned out that there was a lil plattic piece thet got bent and was keeping the slide from dropping..
also this can happen if you leave the gas on it floods the carb and you need to clear it out by riding it

does the throttle feel sticky or like the slide in the carb is slicking open

It sounds like it is a sticking float. Try taking the carb apart and cleaning it, while it is apart make sure the float arm is not bend and making the float hang by catching the side of the bowl. My bike did this for a while when I first got it from not being ridden. After a while it quit, once the gunk in the bowl was cleaned out.

i disagree with the sticking float problem DODGE
a stuck float causes a carb to overflow not cause the bike to rev.
its either a sticky slide
a dirty/jacked cable
or you just left the gas on

Is it sucking air through one of the gaskets.  I think that will do it.

It will rev high if the crank seal on the flywheel side is leaking, if the intake has a leak anywhere between the carb and the cylinder it will rev high. If it only does it for a short time then it is probably cause excess fuel is settling in the crank somehow, usually from leaving the gas on.

i had the same problem on my RM125, especially when the choke was on, it would idle so high that it would die. turns out that my throttle cable was too tight and it wouldnt let the slide come down all the way. i adjusted it and it was fine.

It could be as simple as the fuel screw, when I got my bike it was set so high that it would turn the wheel even if I wasn't on the gas.

Ding, ding, ding!! We have a winner!  I'm with Zack on this - adjust the mixture screw.  My bikes do this every time the seasons change, and it's a simple matter of dialing the mixture screw in.

I also noticed since it's been getting colder, when I first start my bikes I have to keep the choke on longer or it just boggs out
