Go two stroke, especially if your gonna be doing freeriding. Much lighter and eaiser to whip around. And elko, it aint so easy getting a job at a bike shop, you better have some paper to back your claims, they wanna see cartifcations and diplomas.Yes the mechs are idiots sometimes but some of them really know there ***

daveocean:
Ha Now im getting on the fence and i dont want to be........ Ive got good responses from all of you thanks but im still not clear on wether i should get a 125 and be un happy in 4 months or get a 250 and be too short to reach the ground.... is easier to customize the suspension on a 250 or harder springs on a 125? or is it both too expensive? like is said 5"6 195lbs. --- 250vs125 --NEWBIE.........? Scratches head

By the way I have a custom airbrush shop in the central Florida area and if you want some custom plastics let me know!

What type riding will you be doing?  Even with the quad experience this is by your admission your first bike.

Unless you plan to do MX I am not sure I can recommend a 250 2-stroke like the YZ.  They can be a handful and if just trail riding/play riding you may not be happy.

So let us know what type riding (track/trail/woods etc) and we can make some more recommendations.

At 5'6" seat height will be an issue (especially starting out).

Dave is right a 250 2 stroke is going to be alot of bike for a first bike. I would not advise that.
Really need to know what your going to be riding.

Right. I am not interested in racing. I just want to freestyle /trail ride/ maybe take it up to tennessee to see the family once in a while and climb a few trails. but mostly hills/flat land. Florida is mostly flat and trails. but i want to be able to take a few jumps and work my way up. of course i wont start out on 80 ft gaps but would like to get there someday.

Tennessee has a sick ohv park, Windrock. Its right in my back yard, when Im home on leave. If your wanting ot do freestyle, and trail ride, 250 2 stroke is the best all around bike you can buy. You'll have to be careful, but they are the best bet for a do it all bike

As stated by myself and dave, A YZ 250 2 stroke is NOT a bewbee bike . And the YZ is the best.
You want to have fun and that bike will not be fun as a first bike. Check out the KTM line of trail bikes and the 125sx.

I would have to say get a 125 motocross bike.  They are lightweight, well suspended, and have more than enough power for jumping and playing around.  Your height will only be an issue when you are not riding, but thats why bikes can lean.  I am only 5' 8" and have just learned to cope with it.  A 250 fourstroke would be another good choice, just be prepared to put more money into maintenance and devote the time into keeping the bike maintained.

dc, i know i cant but i may go to mit so i could.

right now i am looking at going to mit to be a motorcycle mechaninc or pia (pittsburgh institute of aeronautics, largest aircraft training school in country) to be an air scraft mechanic for usair or something like that. or one of the better pittsburgh schools for business law or accounting or something like that. probably go to robbert morris or something similar. just so you guys know that i'm not all talk and no bite.

and i didnt mean to look so negative against 4 strokes. but if your not racing then theres no reason to buy an mx 4 stroke. and we cant make you buy something. but i suggest you ride both a 125 and a 250 and make your decision off that and not what we say.

I would recommend the 125 two stroke. They are great bikes. From what I hav found the cr has a longer less agressive powerband than the kx or yz which are harder hitting but quicker. I run my friends cr better than my kx for a long time because I couldn't quit over reving the powerband which made me start to lose power instead of keeping the power higher.
Ride it like you stole it, because you might not be able to tommorrow

comparing a mx 4 stroke to a trail 4 stroke bike is like comparing apples to kiwis. they are both fruits. but completely different. a mx 4 stroke. the race models are all going to need fairly frequent expensive and very difficult to do maintanence. a 2 stroke needs a top end rebuild costing no more then 180 bucks at most every 50 hours or so. and it is easy to do. but. BUT you have the 4 stroke trail bikes like the crf250 "x" whihc is the trail version are very reliable and dont need the maintanence the mx 4 strokes need. ~pat

i think you meant 50 hours pat. 5 hours is nuts. mx 4 stroke needs a top end just as much as a 2 stroke but there is more involved in there top ends and it cost more to rebuild a 4 stroke.

oops did i say 5? i meant 50 h/o. but yeah. teh mx 4 strokes need quite frequent hard and expensive maintanence. whereas the mx 2 strokes require fairly regular top end jobs but tis cheap, quick and easy. ~pat

i recommend the 125 2-stroke. the 250 and 125 are the same size, the 250 is just much more powerful. I would NEVER recommend a beginner to start on 250 2-stroke. that sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me. the 125 will be much more manageable and should be all the power you will need.
