Can anyone tell me what the power valve is preset at? And would a broken power valve keep the bike from running at all?

Is it opening and closing? Is it stuck?

If its stuck open it could cause the bike to not start but not likely, and closed it would start and bogg at mid throttle.

One valve broke off and was stuck in against the piston creating a tapping noise the other valve was working good.

sounds bad.  the rms use a single rod to control both halves of the power valve and if one half struck the piston  the top end should come off to check for damage.

I have the bike apart now piston and everything looks good. I have new valves on order. The bike was running fine and started tapping then bogged out and would not start again I talked to friend who told me to check the power valve I found it was broke but I just cannot see how this could keep it from running at all.

generally it wont. u can run ur bike with the PV out. Hillclimb guys do it all the time. But the ticking noise was it hitting the piston right? Are u sure there is no damage to the ring area? did u do a ring end gap measurement?

No I didnt do a ring gap measurement I just visually inspected it. Do you know what the the valve is preset at? I would like to try putting back together and see if I can get it going and if not start over again.

It bogged when the valve broke. With that tapping it would be hard pressed to think there is no visiable marks on the piston.

I agree with woods. the valves are set closed when engine off and only open under acceleration. the spring on the jug side is only to return the valve when the throttle is closed.

You will have to get a manual that gives you the specs. It does need to be turned a certain amount. I have an RM 250 and have the specs for it but they are probably different for the 125.
