Jimmy,
I have been thinking about this challenge, and I want in, even if I don’t get to come and ride because of the military thing. I would like to see our board, dirtrideronline, field a bike for this event. Why you ask? Here are my reasons, be it personally selfish:
1. I want to run the Baja 1000 in the next few years. This event will give me an idea of what to expect in way of riding and equipment needed. (if I can swing getting there and being invited)
2. It will also give me a chance to meet those, which if invited also, have expressed support to my endeavor.
3. I will be able to test parts, which if picked to mod the bike, I would like to run on the 1000 and see how they work.
4. I will learn tons of information on how to set up a bike for different riders and riding styles, rather than just mine, and how to make it work for a group.
5. As I come to retirement from the military, I need to pick up a new career. I want to work in the racing industry and this will give me more insight and I can make some contacts.
6. I would like to see us field 2 teams. 1 team of the guys that want to come and be punished gluttons with me in Baja, and 1 of the other board members that don’t. This way I can run the bike I want to run in Baja with the mods I want and my team can start working together. But as I do not know whether or not I will be able to make it, this is impractical. So, I will help out anyway I can with the board and if I can make it (and get an invite), I will be one happy SOV.
Last, but probably more important
7. There is a lot of knowledge on this board, a lot of characters, and a lot of desire. The same is probably true of all the boards, but ours is loyal to the magazine. As for me, It is the only mag I get. I know it will be hard to coordinate the build through email and the board and then do the work of building the bike. But I think that we can put together a good program and complete the event. It would look good for Dirt Rider to have their own board to be represented too (and when we win the overall, even better).
You don't stop riding because you get old, You get old because you stop riding. SOV - Flying NOE

Guys, I think you are missing an important point: this bike will be dirtrider.com's entry, not Dirt Rider magazine's. I'm pretty sure Jimmy will expect US to build this bike, not him. He may be willing to provide some assistance, but I doubt he is going to put as much effort into it as the internet bike. He isn't likely to pick us if it means putting a heavy burden on himself to lead us by the hand with this project.
That said, I again volunteer my services with this project. Unless Jimmy says that my being a freelance contributor to the magazine is a conflict of interest, I'm up for it. I should have no problem contacting manufacturers for product for this project and I can do the assembly and be responsible for getting the bike to the event and back.
Now let's concentrate on the why of our involvement and we can worry about the how after we get the green light.
For me, the main reason for us to be invited is because we DO carry the Dirt Rider name and connection. The loyal magazine readers who make up this site should be given an opportunity to show just how much of what makes it into the pages of Dirt Rider gets into our collective consciousness and into our own dirt bike experiences. We are a reflection of our namesake and we deserve a chance to show it.

Im with you on this like I said lead or get out of my way! Ive contacted one of my KTM dealer friends and informed them we need a bike and many here have voted for the 300 EXC-W I requested of them to speak to KTM in our behalf to loan use a bike what ever model we vote on for the build! I gave them contact info and I am hoping to hear word on it so we have some thing to show jimmy that well handle the build we just need in.

Yup, your looking at he same direction I am. I saw this in a whole different light than the internet bike ( more serious; would require us providing the bike etc). Dave 2006 YZ-250 2-Stroke 2006 YZ-85 (son)

Well, the fact that I make my living as a writer should tell you why I don't race much anymore. ![]()

If jimmy thinks we are giving him a bike with all the bells and whistle hes crazy! If he gets to keep the bike he has to pay for said bike! Now Im not saying we'll not help out on some things but to come 100% out of pocket for their free advertising is not the answer! Ill ask KTM to loan us a bike but Ill never ask them to GIVE us a bike! Thats just crazy! Now the after market people well most likely donate the parts as free advertising. I mean it just makes good business sense. We finish the test intact their sales sky rocket! We look cool in their gear in a spread in the magazine there product is seen and maybe ever a line or two in the story it self about their generosity. If it was possible that KTM were to give out said bike then I would ask on the behalf of www.xxsuperheroxx.com not dirt rider. But I think that asking KTM to loan the bike to dirtrider the forum would stand a better chance of getting a bike to build!

You don't give him (Dirt Rider) the bike; you basically show up, run the event (I recall there is some testing afterwards???) and leave with your now worn out bike needing a rest. What would happen to it then will need to be decided.
Like it was stated; this isn't going to be like the internet bike where we think it up in "cyberspace" and they build it. I believe its :we think it up, we have to build it, and then we have to show up with it and ride it.
At least thats what the other teams have done before (I will be reading last years tonight when I get home).

This is the kind of thing Jimmy is looking for from us and other website's members in this thread. He wants to know not only why WE think our website should be included, but reasons why HE should include us. I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to hear about what bike any website will bring or how they will mod it, not at this point in the process, anyway. He wants to know how the magazine will benefit from our inclusion and what, as a website, we bring to the table. If we can't even get together on this aspect of the project, I doubt Jimmy will be too keen on giving us the green light. Keep that in mind and lets start doing some convincing. The real fun begins AFTER we get our invite. ![]()

whether or not this is for fun or for publicity is anyones call. i think its for publicity to make more money. how is dr going to make more money if they are not in their own bike build contests. how is it going to look when your writing the article (jimmy) and your very own site is not in the contest. you have all these great sites but the one that dr really wants people to be one is some how not on the list. how is that gonna look. from an outsiders view i can tell you it would not be a site i would want to go on. plus since were getting this bike started way ahead of time we are going to have a bike that is gonna blow that yz out of the water. you wont be able to compare them. plus it helps that we are going to use a ktm. (i hope) lol. you want to know why would you put us in the test? why would'nt you?

Have other sites been nominated? When will the rules to this event be posted? Can you give dates of issues of past 24 Hour tests?

Maybe "ThumberTalk" should be invited so that they can redeem themselves from the internet bike build. I'm sure that they would want to prove they can meet sound requirements with the bike with out having to change anything.
