We need to stay focused right now not on building a bike or getting there, but how our involvement will help the site, the magazine, and this Jimmy Wonka invite opportunity.
What other sites can we hit to spread the word? If Jimmy sees we have the internet covered, we become an asset.
What can we do before the event, on this board and elsewhere, to make our inclusion benefit the magazine and this site?
What can we bring to the table to help the event? The magazine article? The web article? The postings here?
What can we take from the experience to benefit this site?
What if we hooked up with a charity and got people to pledge donations for every mile we covered in the 24 hours? That's something I just thought up, and I like it. Maybe the Full Circle Foundation? It wouldn't have to be anything moto-related. Who on this board has a strong connection to a charity they'd like to nominate? What if we had each rider represent a charity? The riders would be fighting for time on the bike to rack up miles and money for their charity. What if we encouraged the other invitee websites to pick a charity as well? I'm kinda liking this idea. That could stir up a lot of interest and maybe elevate the whole event to something bigger.
There have to be a hundred more ideas like this. I know you guys can come up with them.

Wow, you are a superhero. That's great.
Who has more sites that AREN'T on Superhero's list (so we're not just repeating the same sites)? Who's committing to go there and spread the word if we get this invite?

I will do what I can to help with this invite. This really is the only site I visit so tell me where to go and I'll invite them.
Pete that charity idea is awesome! We could turn the 24 hour torture test into a huge event by involving some charities. I know someone who helps around here with the walk for breast cancer research thing. Sorry I can't remember the real name. Any way I will talk to her and see about setting something up to get sponsors for every mile the team covers in the event or something. Man this is a great idea having a blast riding and helping people out at the same time. Maybe some 9/11 memorial fund or something like that too.
Has anyone posted at ThumperTalk? I'm going to log in there and send and invite if I don't see a thread already.

Hey I just thought of another reason we should be invited to the test. I don't know about everybody but I know a few of us are members of the BlueRibbon Coalition and do our part to help keep land open. I plan on calling my State Rep tomorrow to help stop a bill from passing here in Idaho. I am also going to send an email and try to get as many people I know to do the same. They are trying to turn some prime motorcycle trail and snowmobile riding area into a wilderness area.

MAN, Thats why you get paid the big bucks! GREAT IDIEA! Iv been diebetic all my life, And i know there alot of other riders on other forums that are as well. And when your going riding for the day, Its not just throw your gear on and go, And when you ride woods like i do, Its a pain in the ass! And id love to give the board member of our WALK FOR DIABETES chapter a call and see if they would be interested in a RIDE for DIABETES, AND There in ALL states. And post it on some of the other forums and let them know what we got going on over here! There are a HUGE number of kids who ride with this problem. And its not easy, And they dont say anything. And it would help get the word out that if you take care of your suger, You can do ANYTHING! Including ride dirt bikes all day! Let me know what you think.

Guys,
I like your suggestions for the charities. There are of course many more. Who else want to mention a few close to their heart?
Again, we have not decided making this a charity team, so everything is still WIDE OPEN. The main point of this thread is still to brainstorm and come up with cool ideas.
yzwoods, could you give us a very brief description of what it is to ride with diabetes? A diabetic on the team during a brutal 24 hours could add another level to the team and the stories that come from the event. Again, please be brief, since we are not going forward with the charity concept. Our main focus has to remain coming up with more ideas.

I think it would be interesting to get the team's ideas on their involvement BEFORE and DURING the actual building of the bike and BEFORE doing the ride, then compare it to their observations AFTER the event. It would be interesting to see just how expectations match up (or not) to reality. The relevance to readers is that many prepare for one or two big events each year or are considering it. Reading about how it was approached and executed would be of value to riders who are on the fence about doing such an event or looking for ways to plan their own involvement in one. Additionally, we could keep on online diary of the build and let forum members/visitors follow along with our trials and tribulations.

HEY! I was posting announcements on some of the other forums I visit about this event and one of the Admins on KTMTalk responded that they have already been invited. What gives? Isn't this supposed to be the only place where requests get made? If KTMTalk already got invited based on the one weak post they put in here, then we should be a shoo-in already. What is the timetable for selecting the participants?

I like your idea of people saying what they will do, then comparing it to their follow through and also if things were harder or easier than they'd expected.
As for KTM talk getting invited already - this is the first I've heard of it. I'll look into that.

Check this out, I posted about the 24 Hour on 4Strokes.com and not only did they take offense and yank the posts, they terminated my account. Guess we can expect them not to participate. Go figure...

This is the response I got from 4Strokes.com about their yanking my post about the 24 Hour and deleting my account:
Our forums are not for promoting. They are for riders helping riders. If you would like to promote your event, I suggest you contact the web site and inquire about advertising.
Good day.

Well, that's one less website we have to compete with for an invite. ![]()

Uhm, me!
J/K, I'll play whatever role the forum wants me to.
This is what I posted on the other sites:
Hey guys and gals, I've been asked to post this here (and elsewhere). DR Editor Jimmy Lewis is considering extending invitations to next year's annual 24 Hour Torture Test to a select few websites/discussion groups. The deal is that this is not just an invite to ride the historically treacherous course Jimmy lays out, but to participate in the event as a team. That means the groups chosen will have to build a bike, assemble a support team, and ride the entire 24 Hour. Then they will have to submit the bike to Jimmy and the pros to thrash. Each bike/group will get coverage of both the bike and their effort in Dirt Rider magazine. Unlike the previous Internet Bike challenge, this IS a competition to test your group's bike building skills and your team's endurance.
But first, you have to wrangle an invite from Jimmy to this stellar event. All you have to do is go to the "Participate in the Dirt Rider 24 Hour Test" thread in the DR.com forum at:
http://forums.dirtrider.primediaautomotive.com/
and post your reasons why you think your site should get one of these coveted invitations. Keep in mind, if selected your forum will be expected to build a bike, put together a rider/support team and come to the event in SoCal in early February of 2007. In addition to enjoying a grueling 24 Hour ride through some incredible terrain, you'll be hobnobbing with top pro riders and industry guys like myself (I'll be armed, in case you're wondering), cruising the pits full of manufacturer's semis and support trucks, get an inside look at a major magazine event, and seeing first-hand the kind of course that can only be laid out by the sick and sadistic mind of DR's own Jimmy Lewis. So log on to DR.com now and work Jimmy for that invite!
Now how could any rational person mistake that for self-serving SPAM? So far, KTMTalk and ProRide are buzzing over this opportunity.
