Two-Stroke FOR SURE. first they dont have cams, valves, vale springs, and all that other CRAP to maintain and replace if there old. Also if you throw a rod threw the cylinder look out its twice as much as a 2 stroke head. not olny are they just 2 much up keep there 2 damned expensive. All it takes 2 keep a 2 stroke alive is changin the oil, mixing the gas right with GOOD 2 stroke, and keepin you carb adjusted and filter oiled and your set.
TWO STROKES ALLL THE WAY

4-Strokes! They are more expensive to buy! They are more expensive to maintain, and maintenance is more often! The torque of their engine eats tires, chains and sprockets for lunch! They are louder! They are heavier! 4-Strokes Rule!

Personally, I can not wait until 4-strokes are as good as or better than 2-strokes for MX. For racing in the 125 class, the 125cc 2-stroke can’t beat the twice as large 4-stroke. I might rather trail ride on a 4-stroke too. Assuming I am trail riding very slowly with the family.
But other than that, nothing competes with a 250cc 2-stroke for performance, light weight, low maintenance, cheap maintenance, low overall cost, and fun.

Two smoke: - light - simple technology - fun to ride - less torque than a four stroke - mixing fuel sort of bites
Four stroke: - getting light, but overall heavier than 2 smokes - more complicated with rebuilds, considering the valve train - no mixing fuel - more torque and usable power to the ground
So, lots of pros and cons for sure, so buy two and cover your bases! Check around on some of the popular discussion forums like thumpertalk.com for more owner feedback. I've owned both and while I prefer the four stroke, two strokes are clearly not dead... Good luck!

4- strokes have their purpose. They do well for poking around the trails where you need bottom end. The new 450's are the lazy mans fast bike, a little easier to ride fast if your inexperienced, less shifting and all. That said, most two strokes set up for trails and cross country have enough flywheel weight to almost feel like a 4-stroke on the bottom end, but they still have the fun factor and the simplicity of a 2-stroke. And, if you can ride, and don't need a lazy mans bike, NOTHING compares in the fun factor to the zip and rev of a 2 stroke! Nothing lets you whip it in the air like a 2-stroke. 4's are still too heavy, but even if they end up as light, the physics of the engine and the compression breaking to rear wheel will never let you do in the air over a gap what you can on a 2-stroke mx'r, never. 2 stroke is cheap and easy to rebuild, and I don't know why anyone thinks pre-mixing is a pain, it takes two seconds and the smell, sound, ease of maintenance, power and fun will allways be worth it. Doesn't the fact that a four stroke has to be a 450 to compete with a 2 stroke 250 say enough?

i think that the most important factor about either having a two or four-stroke is personal perference. its what kind of riding you like to do, and you choose a bike that is going to suit your riding ability and riding style. they both excell in different areas. and i think that you cant really compare the two. i think that it would be neat if they split up the 125 and 250f's into different classes. as well as the 450f's and the 250's. but then that would be adding two more classes which would make the race day even longer. but back to the two vs. four topic, i dont think you can compare the two against each other fairly. they are made with different characteristics for different reasons. i dont think it is right to judge one bike is better than the other when they have completely different designs and purposes. and like i said, it comes down to personal preference. but i am biased twards the two-strokes because i like the characteristics of the bikes. i like the fact that they are light and they make a lot of power in a small package. and another thing is that they are so simple to work on. and i agree with you that it is rediculous to say that pre-mixing is a pain. it is pretty simple and it could only be a pain if you are lazy.

i have a two stroke and from what ive seen two strokes are funner because they have a ton of power and the power band will kick in although thaey are harder to handle. 2 strokes are more for racing and 4 strokes should stick to the trails

TWO STROKES! Two Strokes are much better in dirt bikes. NOTHING CAN COMPARE! Unlike atvs where 4 strokes rule and 2 don't compete. There is a huge misconseption that 4 strokes have minimal maitance(oil, air filter.) When the the reality is they are much more complicated and more mataince. Examle four strokes need top ends more frequently almost 2x as often as a 2 stroke and they are much more expensive and difficult to rebuild, they need valve adjustments frequently. As far as mixing oil goes I can buy alot of mixing oil with the $1,500-2,000 i'll save on a new bike. As far as 2 stroke topends go you can do 1 in less than 90 minutes if your expierenced when 4 strokes are much longer with valves system. Two Strokes for EVER!

if you ride any dirt bike in your neighborhood, your neighbeors are going to get annoyed after a while. full size bikes arent make to be ridden in your neighborhood. but if you live out in the country then thats a different story. and all four strokes arent quieter than two strokes. i have heard some four-strokes that are super loud! people put pipes on them and they are just as load, maybe even louder in some cases. four strokes are good for woods riding and SO ARE TWO STROKES. all of the guys winning the outdoor harescrambles and enduros are mostly on two strokes. and Juha Salminen is riding a two stroke. so that proves that the two strokes can beat the four strokes. and also Ricky Carmichael just won the campionship on a two stroke. and not all of the four strokes are all high maintenance. just all of the racing four strokes like the CRF's and other bikes alike. but the trail bikes like the XR's dont need hardly as much maintenance. most of those trail bikes are all bullet proof. they dont need anything. and those engines and valve trains will last a long while before you have to be replacing them as long as you keep up on the maintenance. but those bikes arent well suited for racing speeds usually except for the XR650s. but those are baja bikes. the two strokes are lighter and are quicker than the four strokes. they sill feel a little heavy compared to the two strokes. so really the two strokes can compete with the four strokes in the woods too. if you know how to ride them to their potentials. but the one nice thing about the four strokes is that they are really easy to learn on. they are more forgiving and can teach a beginner great skills before he moves up to a bigger bike. so really all of the bikes have their strong points and their advantages. as well as all of the different sizes of bikes, two or four stroke, have their purposes for different people. but i do like the two strokes and i hope that they will still be around. and i think that the two strokes are still going to be around because there is still going to be a demand for these bikes. and you still have the older two strokes that you will still be able to ride because they wont be able to ban the older bikes. and the two strokes that are before the year 2002 and some select 2003 models have green stickers. AND LONG LIVE THE TWO STROKES!!!!!
