4 strokes

I hung up my race leathers back in '85 and soon after I stopped riding 2-strokes for good. I kept riding my ATVs, but I had no desire to get back on a two-wheeler. Too much work and not enough fun, especially as I got older and more banged up. Then I was invited to the 2000 Dirt Rider 24 Hour Torture Test (die-hard Harley guy at the time working on the same floor) where I got to ride a Yamaha YZ426F and some 2-strokes. I had so much fun on that 4-stroke that I knew I was going to get back into the sport. That would never have happened if 4-stroke technology hadn't advanced to the point it did and 2-strokes had remained the dominant technology. I'm having more fun now than ever and only wishing that they had come along years ago.

Now if you changed that to "it does not take near as much riding effort to ride a four stroke as it does a two stroke." I'd agree with you. Both have their skill requirements, they're just different.

Some how I knew it was going to be you who was to try and bust my balls for saying that but then again you really confirmed what I was saying. Yea way different you can put a two stroker on a four and hell do ok for him self because of his skills how ever you cant put a four stroker whos has never rode a two stroke on a two with lazy skills they’ll hurt themselves do to bad habits learned on a four. I would never allow some one on my 440 in less I know there skill levels up to handling the raw power of the bike. The ones with skill ride two strokes those with poor skills or lazy and have bad habits ride four stroke there forgiving. You stated it your self the fours are way easier to ride.  "it does not take near as much riding effort"
so any ways you your self said the two stroke where to much effort to enjoy yep their a hand fully and not every ones cut out to handle them.

I'm only here to keep you guys on your toes. I would agree with much of what you said, but I don't like the idea that a 4-stroke rider is lazy. Yes, someone going from a 4 to a 2 is going to encounter a huge learning curve compared to the other way around, but it has little to do with laziness and more to do with things like no compression braking, having to work the throttle more precisely, weight, and a host of other differences. Both require skills to master. Both have strong and weak points. Neither has the market cornered on making better riders or making them lazy. In another 2-3 years when there are no more production 2-strokes to buy, this will all be a moot point as we'll all be on 4-strokes (unless we insist on riding older bikes). I was riding 2-stroke street bikes (Yamaha RDs, Kawasaki H-1 and 2) back in the '70s when the EPA killed them off. They were gone almost overnight. The same will happen to the 2-stroke dirt bike, unfortunately.

Be nice now, if you want to make fun of a guys riden skills, bike, gear, hauler espesialy hauler if its honda, but other than that you should be nice becouse this is a dirtbike forum and we should aim for that concept. I like to make fun of guys who used to be Marines but I realized that it would eventualy hurt yzwoods feelers and that I should stick to content. But if the Marines ever sponser a free style rider like the navy does you can be assured Im going to be riding that guys arse every single day of the week and twice on mondays becouse those are the worst day of the week.

Glad you came to that realization, whatever the reason. As an ex-Marine I wouldn't see the humor in something like that. Making light of military service is never funny, especially now when so many of them are on foreign soil defending the rest of us.

Well Cyclewriter I think that I should intro myself becouse we have never talked. Im Engineman Second Class Rutan, Im currently stationed at Seal Delivery Vehical Team One Hawaii. I think that should explain why I get such a kick out of poking fun of Marines. I also take it to heart when service members are bashed for doing thier duty to our nation. I hope this will explain my last post and let you understand that my dues are are currently paid in full so if I start poking fun it is becouse Im really suffering the pains of the required tasks and that when I respect all of those that have to deal with the desicions made by those elected above us.

Glad to hear it, but I think you can see why such a statement on an internet forum with no prior knowledge of who you are and what you do might cause a stir. I'm a little hypersensitive on the subject because just last week I had some punk on another message board take a dig at me for having been a Marine in Recon saying the Army Rangers were a better unit (he wasn't that diplomatic). Not something I haven't heard before from another soldier, but this was an 18 YO punk that hasn't even served. It's one thing for fellow soldiers to badger each other good-naturedly, but for someone who hasn't even served to make jokes is totally inappropriate. I hope you can see where I'm coming from. No harm, no foul.

Well I give you that one BUT it should be remembered that the freedom of speech is one of the most important things that we as military members have to protect. I believe that the Marine Recon. units are cross trained better to do many jobs that the Rangers arent. I will tell you honestly that I havent meet many recon guys that I personnaly respected, but as a group they are very well trained and a highly determened soldiers. That is nothing against you but you personnly understand the mind set in a group of that nature and might possibly understand what I am talking about.

Freedom of speech comes with responsibilities. It doesn't come with blanket authority to say whatever, whenever and wherever you want (can't yell FIRE in a crowded theatre that's not on fire or make a bomb joke to an airport screener). That's why we have libel and slander laws, as well.

Freedom of speech aside, someone who hasn't served that makes fun of another person's military service should expect to be called on it, especially if they do it in a public forum. They may have a right to their speech, but I also have a right to respond. Whatever branch you're in and regardless of your feelings about Marines, I respect the fact that you have served and would not take offense to a light-hearted joke. That doesn't go for someone who hasn't served and I'm pretty sure you would feel the same way. Hoorah!

Im serving as a service to those who payed severely for the freedoms that we get to act upon, many members of my family paid their dues and some more than others but it is my contribution. I did get offended by a pictue that some one posted awhile back busting on the Army becouse it was slanderous and outright negitive. I have been working around this subject for a while now and becouse most of the people I ride with and hang out with are military I dont get to hear peoples opions on this matter. If you dont mind what years did you serve? And where did you serve.
