So I was looking around tonight, and started lookin at the new gen 5 crf 450f. That bike is beyond sick. I mean that thing is uber nasty.lol How hard is it to check the valves on a honda. I can change oil and clean air filters like a champ, but valves??? I havent had the chance to look at one, i know it cant be to hard to figure out, but I cant find one out here to look at. Whatd you guys think of them? And dont let this desolve into a 4 stroke vs 2 stroke, I know most of you all are two stroke loyalist. But I hope your good enough riders to recognize a good bike when you see one, no matter how many strokes.

Yes I can rebuild a helio engine, there easy, its a big tube with a balanced fan assembly compressing the air through it to make power. Valves, I understand why you check them, and how often they need to be checked, Ive just never done it. I have set valve lash on a mechanical cam for a car, is it the same prinicpal? Besides 92, if one of the engines I build comes apart I dont have to pay for the bastard, as long as it wasnt something I did when building it.Lack of maintenance by the air crew isnt my problem. Lack of maintenace by me on a bike? Well I have to buy my own bikes so thats a problem.lol

DC. U know I'm here for u. LOL

Checking the valve lash on the modern day four strokes is easier than changing tires.

any body with any mechanical ability can check or shim their valves in about 2hours tops.

and be very confident that what they did is correct. Valve lash as u know is only a measurement of a gap between the top of the valve stem (in this case the shim) and the bottom of the cam lobe.

read pin its thread on checking and shimming valves its a very good write up.

i wrote up some stuff in my Sir clip thread, but pins is way more thorough.

Even die hard big bore 2 stroke guys could never discount modern day big bore four strokes.  Even the Mulisha dudes are mounting them now!!

DC start a new thread and ask how many modern day race type 4 stroke owners would trade their rides back in for a two stroke.

I cannot answer this. But i bet it would be few.

From what I've read that new Honda has quite a few kinks in it's armor.  I may be better to wait a year and let the factory solve solve all those little problems first.

4 strokes are not really harder to maintain.  There is just more involved, and when it comes time to replace parts there is more of them.  That is what drives up the cost of these bikes.  Thumpers are fun to ride and those 450s have more than enough power for anyone but hill climbers.  But it is the cost of maintenance, and the loud noise levels that have steered me away from them.  That and I am leery of buying a used one because there is no guarantee the previous owner took good care of the bike.

Bill, modern day four strokes make very good hillclimbers. More and more   kick butt on the 2 strokes. especially on technical hills that require more tractor like qualitities.
