I know a couple guys with the 200sx and they are as reliable as a hammer.  And when you do need to do a top end it's 2-stroke simple and cheap.  They also definitely do have as much power as most 250F's.  I have a 250F and like it a lot, but it's definitely not as much fun as a 2-stroke most of the time.  And if you have $3K you can buy a used 200 now instead of waiting a year to save more $.

I really have no idea. I would look in the cycle trader and see what year you can get for your price range. I would probably try to get the '04 and then if you cant find one, then just step down to the '03.

I think that you need to give the 250's a chance here still. Over all, you may be a little disappointed with the power on the 250f or the 200sx. The 200sx isnt much if any faster then the new 125's. The thing is, the 200sx makes more power over a longer spread, so it will be easier to ride fast. The 200sx is a better comparison to the 250f's then the 125's are.  The 250 2 strokes are not as much of a beast as you may think they are. They are actually quite a bit easier to ride then the 125's. Sure they do make more power, but its the power that they make down low that makes them so friendly. You can really lug the 250's where as you can't really lug the 125's or the 200 that well. The 200sx are pretty rare and you could probably find better deals on a 250 and have alot better luck finding them.  The main thing that turns me away on the 200 is the fact that you would have to race in the 250 class now. And if the 250f has about the same power and can still qualify for the 125 or lites class...why not go for the 250f? Yamaha has made the yz250f since 01, so you should be able to find one of those, but then you run into the maintance problem; how often did they change the oil? Are the valves in spec? Is the top end good?...And so on. Yamaha's are a very reliable bike and you really cant go wrong there. You just have to find a bike that has been properly maintaned and you should be good.

Its all up to you, but If it were me, I would choose between the 250f or 250 2 stroke. Even though your parents say you can't get a 250, maybe you need to do some more convincing. If your a good smart rider, you will be fine, but if your dumb and get cocky, that is when you could get hurt...no matter the size of the bike.

I have a 200 EXC and it has more than a 250f, so i know a 200sx will.  KTM re-built the motor in the 200's in 2004 so that is the year model you want. The new motor has a little more on the bottom end.
