remember when...

...the year was 1967 or 1968 (I think), I was 8 or 9 years old.  At the district 37 desert races my job was to man the newspaper booth, selling copies of "Desert Wrap-Up", a newspaper published by my dad.  JN Roberts was the man to beat, but my personal hero was a checkers MC rider by the name of George Walker.  I remember the day was soggy, like the name of the drylake where the race was going on.  I was all alone while the racing was underway.  The steady drizzle had put a damper on the campfire, and I was really cold.  There were only a few embers, that would not respond to the dead (though damp)creasote branches I tossed on.  In a moment of resourceful genius, I spied the five gallon gas can nearby with pre-mix in it, and came up with the answer to my dilemma.  I began to dribble the gas onto the glowing embers, and "WOOF!" the fire responded!  The one millisecond of self-congratulation changed to pure horror as the flames chased the gas up to the can, and toward my hands!  It all happened so fast, and I was only a boy.  I did the most logical thing at the time, which was to throw the can away.  Unfortunately, I threw it in an arc right towards the car, and the fire went with the can...

...thanks yz.  I managed to get the fire out and when the riders all started coming back, all was back to normal.  Anyway, what I really remember about that particular race was that George Walker had crashed hard, and when they brought him back to camp, he looked awful...head cut causing severe bleeding, mixed with mud and the streaked by the rain, anyway, those old desert racers were made of stout stuff, because he came right out to the next race to give it his all again...

but you do remember when you were 9, don't you?  That is also how old I was when I first rode a motorcycle.  It was a Mustang 250, and I was too short to reach the ground with my feet, but that did not deter me!  We were out at Lake Elsinor in So California at the time, and I was bugging my dad to let me ride!  He planted me on the thing, and pushed me along until he could drop it into first gear and let me ***

hey guys, if you want to stay on the thread with "remember when" stories, go to page 8.  Warning! If you want to read a bunch of teenager chit-chat, keep reading the next 7 pages or so...-Paul

Oh yah I remember that age. My first time on a bike was when I was about 13. My friends brother had a 1970s Honda CB125 that we used to ride around when he wasn't home. He probably wondered why the thing was always low on gas.
