Is a 450 trail ridable? There is a 05 or 04 crf450x in the local shop for like $3900.  What brand would be the most tame...except suzuki.

I have an 05 CRF450X and I love it.  It's the best bike I have ever owned, so far.  I thinks its great for trail riding.  In 1st it's low enough to just crawl through the tight sections.  The power is very controlable and it has alot of it.  I keep hearing about how it needs to have all these mods done to it, but besides setting up the suspension to suit your style of riding I havn't found it neccessary to do anything to it.  As far as engine reliability I cant help ya there havn't had mine long enough for anything to go wrong yet.

4 tips for Honda Longevity:

1. Change you oil and oil filter religiously, stick to the recommendations or even more often.

2. Learn how to check the Valve clearances and check them regularly, anything out of spec I would recommend pulling the cylinder head to inspect all the parts (vaves, cam, seats, etc.) to ensure the out of spec adjustment is not due to worn or broken parts.

3. Avoid riding at constant high RPM's, on the 450 you really don't need to rev it hard to go fast, it has plenty of torque to pull the next gear.

4. Check, double check, and check once more that you have a positive seal around the air filter every time you re-install it after cleaning (it's really easy to not have it seated correctly.)

I also recommend purchasing an hourmeter so you can keep accurate maintenance intervals.

Come check it out!!

You will be just fine for your riding ability and your weight. Later on you might want to mess with the clickers on your forks to try and dial them in better.
