hahaha...i hear ya!  i'm a snowboarder and this weather blows.

but one year we were getting antsy to board, so me and a couple friends built a platform with a 6ft drop and a rail and a little kicker out of wood....we then went to the local ice rink and loaded two truck beds full of Zamboni shavings and went to a local park at like...11:30 at night.

set up our platform at the top of the hill with a tarp down to the slope with our little ramp at the end leading on to the rail...shovled all the "snow" on to our "slope" and made our own little jib

but only one person went before my doofus ex boyfriend ate crap on the rail and snapped the hinges...ruined our night....and broke three ribs.  hahaha

but it was cool, snowboarding in So Cal in September....some of my friend goofed around on what was left for a while.

best part, we got it all on video...i'll have to find that.

yea, it's basically the same process as man made snow on the slopes....just on a smaller more ghetto scale.  it's got to be cold enough though...i don't think 55 is cold enough yet.

I remember making snow at Mountain High Ski Area in the late 70's (for three ski seasons).  The key is to get the air pressure and water volume combination right.  If the temperature is steady at 28 degrees or colder, you can make decent enough snow, but at 30 or 32 it's tricky.  The humidity needs to be pretty low for it to work at 30 degrees.  If the temperature is dropping through the night you need to adjust the water volume (turn it up) or else all you will be making is mostly air.  If you put too much water on, the snow will be too wet and dense, which is okay for the first night, to make a good base.  The second night you can make the snow a little lighter and more skiable.  If there is a slight wind you can use it to your advantage by spraying the snow into the wind a little bit, and the wind will carry it down slope for you.  Otherwise you need to make piles and keep moving the snow gun throughout the night.  Of course a groomer comes in handy here, to spread the piles for you at the end of the night and level them out for smooth slopes.

...we spent more time out tearing up the slopes on the snowmobiles than we did making snow.  We also had the keys to the resort, all the chairlifts, groomers, restaurant, etc.  We made our own course, jumps and all, to run around on during the night between checking the snow guns.  In the morning we'd take the groomers out and smooth out the track so nobody would know...

...except one night when we had a powerfailure while on the chairlift between the base lodge and the midway station, too high in the air to jump!  The air compressors shut down, so all we were making for two hours was rain.  We just about ruined two main ski runs that night...
