Skipper: Wood-meister!
The 98 YZ has a bit different port timing than the later YZ250's.. the N3EW is slightly richer at the root, and that would make his off-idle soft spot even softer.. hence the recommendation for the N3EJ.
oh didn't see this post skip.
speaking of different port timing. I read i may benefit from a spacer plate on the 97. Ever read that?

I haven't heard of a spacer plate benefit for that year YZ, but that's not to say it isn't the case... I just honestly don't know anything about it

I am a firm believer in Red and Blue needles and 1/2 clip changes. Change is good! Necessary, if you ride Red and ever want your front end to come off the ground.

Just a quick question. Riding fuel injected ATV's for the last 5 years has made me forget most of my jetting knowledge(not that I had that much to begin with). I recently got back into bikes with a CR500. By following your jetting procedures the pilot setup is right on the money with the air screw at 1.5 turns out. To the best of my ability to tell, the main jet is pretty darn close too. I don't have a plug fowling problem, yet my plugs come out alot blacker than I'd like them too. The stock needle position for my carb is with the needle as low as it goes (clip in the first position). The needle in my carb was in the fourth position (it has 5 total). I'm trying to get this sorted out so I moved the clip up to the second position to lean it out a little. I havn't had a chance to ride it yet to see if it changed things. Does it sound like I'm moving in the right direction or do you have any advice for me? Thanks

you are moving in the right direction. If the plug is blacker than you want and the bike runs crisp throughout the throttle range you are in a better world than running on the lean side of things. If you run a lot of roads and high speed terrain (like open desert) it is good to have the plug on the black side. If you are into technical trails with a lot of slow speed time, plus climb into the mountains now and then you could lean it out with a smaller main jet. The larger the main jet you can run the better for top end power IMO. I like to run my bike that way. My plug may be on the black side but I get the most power available on the top end. Of course with a CR500 you may not be too concerned with getting the most power out of your engine LOL
