guys, im looking into buying a 2-stroke either a 125 or an 85.

I have a 4-stroke, and there is really light maintenance on it. I want to buy

a  CR 2 stroke, but im wondering how much Maintenance is involved to

keep this bike im good shape.

Can you please give me some ideas.

thanks Alex.

what 4 stroke do u have know? i think if ur gettin a 85 the cr 85 or the yz 85's are a good choice they both have a 6 speed gear box so the power is spread out. Also i her the rm 85 is also good, did u think about the kx 100 because they sute smaller and taler people.  it depends on how tall u are and how much u weight. to have a 125 u wanna be over 145 pounds and not be to far off teh ground. if ur alittle shorter then teh kx100 will be good

hey thanx for the info,

Jusy wondering how more Maintenince is there needed on a 2 stroke

than a 4 stroke?

im thinkin of an CR85 but its almost the same size as what i have now.

so i think i may go with the 125, but i may be to small for that

i dont have a 85 or a 125 personally but i dont have a 250 and i know with the 2 strokes in general u will have less mantinece and the parts are less expanisve but with the 2 strokes u might have to clean the carb more often and keep things more clean because the oil in teh gas makes it a bit more gooy

If you already have a four stroke, just think about not having vavles and that is how much maintenance you will have. And also like Hondalover said, the parts will be cheaper. Well the engine parts at least.

My guess is you are trying to compare a bicycle to a tricycle. When you first get the tricycle, it seem like you can go fast and everything, but pretty soon, you conquer all of the "skills" on the little Tri. So you look into a bicycle. They can both go about the same speed, but one was ment for more relaxing slow riding, but when pushed they can go pretty fast is a straight line. The bike on the other hand can go fast in corners and jump and do all of that fun stuff.

In this case you are mostly riding a small bore 4 stroke trail bike which would be the tricycle. They have just as fast of top speed of a MX bike, but they lack in many areas. A trail bike has an engine that is very complex, but the way the engineers design it is for reliability...not "great" performance. A 2 stroke has a engine design that is very simple but needs to be worked on more often. The 2 stroke engines are pure performance, where as on a trail oriented 4 stroke, they are all reliability. So when you ask how are the 2 strokes compared to the 4 strokes, you need to realize that its not comparable.

The 2 stroke 85 will have alot of maintance compared to your bike, but now if you were to be comparing a 85 to a racing 4 stroke (i.e. CRF250R) the 4 stroke actually has more maintance because it wasn't designed to be as reliable, but rather all performance.

So yes, a 85 2 stroke will require you to do alot of work on it, but thats a race bike for you. I mean you can't have 100% ride time and 0% maintance.

ok so brandon just types alot to make it sound like he knows what hes talking about. jk! but i have 3 ...4 strokes and 2.....2 strokes a cr125 and a cr250 both bikes are so good(2 strokes) i have never done any maintenance on  my 2 strokes since i bought them which was about 3-4 years ago. they are Gods toys. they are beautiful. they start. and their fun. 4 strokes are better, but their a pain. if you just wanna have a  good time and ride get the 2 stroke and the 2 stroke is good for you since your young and you need to learn how a bike whips. screw the 85 youll grow out of it in a few months. get the cr125 fun bike to ride.

yea thanx for the info,

i want a 125, but im not sure if im ready to ride this bike. Im about 5'4 and about 130 pounds. Do u think im ready for a 125. I got into Mx  a few years ago from a friend, and hes telling me to stick with the 85 but i want a bike that im not goin to grow out of in a few months or a year.

however as much as i want the 125 im not sure if its going to be to big for me. or if the 85 will be to small.

If u were me what would you go with?

Are you growing?..My guess is you are. I would say to get the 125 and grow into it. At 5'4 you arn't too small, you should do fine, and by the time you grow into the bike you will just get even better.

thnx for the info.

If i can find enough info about the 125 i think thats the bike i will go with

from peoples explanations 2-strokes dont seem like that much more

work than the 4-strokes. and yea im growing so it may be a good idea

to look into the 125 so i dont keep growing through bikes.

I had a 125 two stroke when I was 14 years old.  The 125's back then were a lot different than the ones today though.  The ones today, are taller, lighter, and have way more HP.  Plus their handling is absolutely the best.  I never had more fun on a dirt bike, than I did with that first 125!

If I were you, I would run as fast as I could to buy a 125 two stroke.  With all the nonesense going on now with 250 four strokes, you should be able to get a 125 pretty cheap.

Maintenance wil depend on how hard you ride it.  Based on what you've told us, I would say keeping the air filter and tranny fluid clean is all you'll have to do.

you should put a topend or rings atleast in it every year. Make sure you don't run it out of gas or you could burn up the topend. Make sure you run the proper fuel/oil mixture. clean your air filter every ride. shange transmission oil regularly.... and have fun!
