I want to get into dirt biking

Uhm, okay guys/gals. I've been playing paintball for about 9 or 10 years, I'm 18 now, and it's lost its rush it once had. I've done it all in paintball, played for a sponsored team, won tournys, did the rec scene, everything, big deal right. Well I've always been intrigued by MX on TV and thought it would be a great hobby as it's an "extreme sport". But I'm wondering how easy is it to get into even if its just riding on the weekends for fun. I don't want to get into racing or competitions of any sort, I really just want to ride for fun.  I'm 6'5 about 300 lbs, is this going to be a problem? Also, what bike should I look at a 150 or 250? Is there a 300 series? What do the numbers stand for? As you can tell I'm a complete nOOb when it comes to this so any help would be expecially helpful.

Thanks in advance,

      Kevin

It depends on whay you will be riding, mx or trails.  At 6'5 300 pounds a 150 is out of the question.  If your just going to ride trails just for fun i would suggest something like and xr400, xr250, witch are 4strokes or you could get a kdx220 or mabey a ktm exc250 or 300, witch are 2strokes.  The  xrs will be easyer to ride and will be more user friendly than the kdx's and exc's.  The kdx's and exc's will be alot more snappy and they will want to get up and go alittle more than the 4stroke trail bikes.  Now if you want to get into motocross it will be tough, because you are too big for a 125 and a 250f,  so the only way to go is with a 250 2stroke (im my opinion is the best all around bike ever made) or a 450 4stroke.  Now the mx bikes will be a but load faster than the trail bikes, so you just cant get on them and go full throttle.  But i would deffenatly say go with an xr400 then move to a 250 2stroke race bike when you get ready.

Allright, thanks Bodycast, but who makes the xr400 or the 250 2stroke?

Ok honda makes the xr400, the 250cc 2stroke dirt bike is made by everyone.  There is a yz-yamaha, rm-suzuki, cr-honda, kx-kawasaki, sx-ktm.  Those are the main 250cc 2strokes but i would not recomend them for a first bike, they are very fast and very powerfull.  There is another bike you might like, the yamaha wr450 that is a very nice trail bike but i would stick with the xr400 because it is bulletproof, meaning it can take almost all the punishment you can trow at it.  Here is a xr400...

While we are at it i might as well fill you in on the class structor of raceing.  There is a 125cc class and a 250cc class.  In the 125cc class they race 125cc 2strokes and 250cc fourstrokes (the 4strokes need twice the cc's to run with a 2stroke, thats why they have more cc's.)  In the 250cc class there are 250cc 2strokes and 450cc 4strokes.  Now the xr 400 is by no means a race bike it is a trail bike.  I think it will be a great bike for you, it has the power and with your size you should be able to handle the weight no problum.... Oh and the 250fs and 450fs are racing 4strokes, nothing like the trail bike 4strokes.

What bikes do the guys like Deegan use? Because eventually I wouldn't mind being able to do a few tricks myself. I've been looking into everything as far as safety as well, so who makes the best boots, helmets and stuff. I've heard wonderful things about Alpinestars, Thor, and Troy Lee.

as long as the helmet says DOT on the back(Department of Transportation) they have to approve the helmet to be like legally safe or something. but yea most gear is good
