It's a 1993 Suzuki DR250s. Has had sloppy shifting in the past, like hitting a false neutral between 4th and 5th gear. Now it will shift down into 1st and up into neutral but thats it. Will not go any higher. Is this common? How big a deal to fix it? Any speacial tools? Or is it sommething best left to a shop to do? I do not have a manual yet, I have to order it. Thanks for your help!

I am lost on transmission problems but I would think that you would have to crack the case to fix it. Sorry, wish I could help.

Sounds like a bent shift fork to me - time to split the cases

I plan on slitting the cases tonight just to get an idea of what i'm getting into. Looks like this job could be over my head.

as skip says probably a bent shift fork. it goes into some gears but not all and you did not mention any weird noises. no strang clunkings in the bottum and when you change your oil i assume there was not pounds of metal flakes. i'd wait till you have a manual to do this
