You asked for some hard evidence about people switching back to 2 strokes. Well this a poll done on thumpertalk, a 4 stroke forum. The results are interesting. poll

I already switched back to 2 stroke:                                     35.29%

I will switch back to 2 stroke quite soon:                               7.56%

I'm thinking to switch back to 2 stroke some day:                        9.24%

I was always on 2 stroke:                                                21.85%

I'm not switching back to 2 stroke and I'll continue to ride 4 stroke: 17.65%

I'm actually switching from 2 stroke to 4 stroke:        8.40%

I like the look of those results so far!

So I wonder what the main reasons are for switching back? Performance issues? Maintenance issues?

Maintainence I'd guess. But everyone has their very own reason, some prefer the smell of ring dingers, the sound, the 'on-the-pipe' riding, etc...!

Cost of/and maintenance would probably be the biggest reasons. I think the fun factor would also be a very big reason. A little birdy in my ear keeps telling me the 2 stroke is a lot of fun to ride.

I have no idea but i'd think the maintenance issue would rank up there. I know I couldn't afford the up-keep and i'm not doin too bad financially.

Would the maintenance really be that bad if it was mostly desert & trail ridden?

Interesting. And here I am thinking of buying a thumper. Of course if I bought one, it would supplement my currect 2 stroke, NOT replace it. A YZ250 & a CRF450X makes for a versatile quiver.

You need to do all the current maintenance you do plus check valves once a month. So that also means a thousand dollar top end rebuild once a year. Thats more then I can afford.

$1000 to do a top end on a 4 stroke?? where did u get that figure??  if yr valves stay in spec which they usually do then a four stroke re ring is really no more than a 2 stroke cost wise.

Then why can't people afford them and are switching back to 2 strokes because of co of maintenance.
