hi all im new here and just recently picked up a 1980 suzuki rm125 for dirt cheap. im a wrencher but on v-8's dont know alot bout 2 strokes. (been learnin alot though haha) my question is what would cause the cylinder to fill up with gas and become flooded badly? my guess is valve needle/seat but i dont want to spend 64bucks on one if i dont have too. ive taken the carb apart bout 10 times now and am gettin real good at it lol. been changing float levels and re-checking everything and cant seem to figure it out. i can get it runnin and idling with the choke on but then it eventually floods itself out after bout a minute of running. heavy smoke too. gonna have to break down and go to the stealership i suppose. any input is gladly appreciated. thanx in advance. i will be here often i believe after just briefly skimming through the site. cheers!! (sorry for long post)

don't worry about where you posted we all use the active post & don't go searching through cat's.
i would try your jetting jeezzz sounds rich as heck. I would get the new needle & seat because it will play hell with you if thats what it is. if it still does it lean out your jetting. also DO NOT reuse "cleaned" spark plugs they don't come back & will not work right. so by the sounds of it buy a box or so. also since you work on V8's i assume you know how to do a compression test i would take one to be sure thats not what it is. also what does your plug look like (color) it will smoke some but should just barely smoke a tiny bit when your ridding. what is your fuel oil ratio? what oil are you using? when i got the bike i pulled the bowl off and the main jet was in the bottom of it, and threads still in the carb. (had to use easy out) it was a 250 i believe but my parts store only had a 230 so that what i got in it now. never knew that bout the spark plug, looks good and clean just soaked in gas. i did a compression test and it was about 145. fuel/oil was 30:1 just using some canadian tire generic 2stroke oil thankx for the reply

well the plug should be a tan color wet & black means you have rich jetting. i would order a 250 if thats what was in it(im horrible with the actual jetting changes but can diagnose whats wrong) 145 on compresion is on the low side so that may be part of the problem but we should be able to at least get it running for you. but yes i have learned not to clean plugs through trial & error. bump your oil ratio to 32:1 or 40:1. 30:1 is rich imo i run 40:1 but my bike is jetted for it alot of people run 32:1 also. for your bike cheap oil is what i would use. what do you mean when you got it the main jet was in the bottom of the bowl? the actual jet piece with the hole in it was sitting in the bottom of the float bowl. the threads for the jet were still where the jet should be just under the ring thing?? i will order the new valve and seat assembly and keep ya posted. thanks sanders

running without the air filter right now, id assume the tank is getting air- (as per hole in gas fill cap) will try a new plug, smoke is white id say most defn white- like antifreeze but thats none existent on this bike, my guess is all the unburnt fuel. thanks man

ohhh haha well when you go to tune it & make sure your jetting is correct you will need to have your filter on because it will cause a difference in jetting DavidS

White smoke is just premix, but cheap oil will make it smoke more. I am not a carb guy but what position is the needle in.

i believe i put it on the 1st notch. now when i say 1st notch i mean the far end from the tip so it goes down farther into carb to lean out

ehhh its sounding to me like your going to need to change your jetting. it shouldn't be pushing that much fuel with the needle on the top notch when it is correctly jetted. it sounds like this thing is just gorging on the fuel through rich jetting & that this is what may be causing your problem. but also take the cap off & see if that does any thing DavidS
