well im considering selling the '03 250 and checking into 450's. i have 2 problems here.  i bleed blue, so betraying yami would be wrong, but its no secret that the honda was better in the years 2002-2004 which im looking at. i would love to get the yzf but i heard the 4 speed isnt the best of trannies. i do a lot of freeriding, (ocotillo, johnson valley etc..) i also do a lil bit of moto. then sometimes i just love to blitz across the desert. what would you guys do in my situation? im pointing towards the honda, but i just love the color blue!

Remember that the '06 (and '07) YZ450F have 5 speeds.  My friend at the shop had a '06 (now is getting an '07).  He said the '06 was a huge improvement over the '05 and earlier.

So you can still bleed blue and have your 5 speed too!

Given the diversity of your riding, a 4-speed is going to leave you disappointed, especially in the desert. Personally, I wouldn't trade the proven reliability of the Yamaha for an extra gear on an older bike. I would do whatever it took (legally) to get the money to buy a newer 5-speed Yamaha before I settled for something that isn't really what I want. If you truly "bleed blue," then you really have no other choice.

I own a 2003 Yz450f I am very happy with it. I have changed the sprockets for my application, but I am a firm believer it is all in the rider. I also read all of the articles about the differences in the bikes. Some of them are the riders opinion and what works good for you, may not work for others. I was also shooting for a Honda. I am a Honda fan. I have owned Honda's all my life. But I was impressed with the Yamaha. DO you have a friend that owns one you could try? If you could try it- I think you would like it.

thanks for all of the help guys. ive checked out the 06's but the only problem with that is, theyre not in my price range.  im a high school student and my parents make me pay for EVERYTHING. so if i sell my 250 i'd have to make up the slack of 6000, opposed to a used bike which would cost around 3500-4000. you'd think getting another bike would be great, but its so hard to choose! perhaps i could co-sign a new 06 with my dad, and make the payments.
