Sputtering 1987 430wr HELP!

I recently bought and restored a 87 430wr, new upperend, etc. I have been trying to jet this bike and have been very unsucessful. It starts and idles fine, riding it, it will spit and sputter mid rpm but cleans up nicely on the upper rpms... It has a 6dh20 needle in it and it seems that moving the clip does very little. any ideas??? the spitting and sputtering in the mid rich or lean symptom??  Like I said it cleans up and has plenty at full throttle so I believe the main jet is correct.
