Sicboy-Slim: Hey, I just cleaned my air filters and I don't have any air filter oil, Can I use something else like just a little bit of motor oil, or some chain lube. Thats the only fluids I have right now. My buddy doesn't use any kind of oil, just cleans it with gas, dries it, then throws it back on again. He looks at me like I'm crazy for using oil on an air filter, but we ride a lot of dusty back roads, and i'm pretty sure I read some where in here that dust will go through your filter easier if not oiled....
Here is everything you (and especially your friend who is or has ruined his motor): Air Filter How to
The air filter is one of the most important pieces to keeping your bike running well for a long time.
Also, before there was specialty air filter oils (in the 1970's) we did use motor oil, so in a complete pinch it would be better than nothing but true air filter oil is much much better than regular oil. .

joshcarrier5: Yeah theres the picture! I think it good to spread the grease all of the edge there he has a large ammounts in the same area all around but that is very good to!
On the YZ-85 that was used for this, greasing the outer edge does no good. The plastic cage presses the filter against the air box about the center of the foam flange.

I believe Dave is saying that the outer edge of the filter doesn't come into contact with the air box on that particular bike, therefore it is pointless to grease it (again for that particular bike) He only greased the surface area of the filter that makes contact...but I could be wrong.

That is what he is saying. Run a bead with your finger around the air box flange where your filter meets and around the flat end off the filtter where it will meet the box. After putting in the screw, LIGHTLEY Press around the filter to the box.

Right in the user manual of my bike it says to use 2 stroke oil on the filter so thats what I did with my old filter (my bike is an antique) but now I have new filters and I'm only using real filter oil and filter cleaner on them because I don't want to ruin the filters with gas
