In the history of dirt bikes, there have been a few big transformations:
Originally, people converted road bikes into dirt bikes. In the 1960s, manufacturers addressed this market and the first factory dirt bikes were born.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, dirt bikes went from heavy, dual shock, air cooled relics to the liquid cooled, mono shock, two strokes that ruled for 20 years.
Right around the turn of the century, the two stroke became an endangered species. It didn’t take long for the four stroke to dominate the market. In 2005, everybody made top shelf two stroke race bikes. By 2008, only Yamaha and KTM stayed in the market. Around this same time, the aluminum frame also took over and now KTM is the only major company to use steel.
What do you think is going to be the next transformation? Is it electric bikes? What about composite frames? Could direct injection lead to a return of two stroke dominance?

I Dont really know much about the future, I just buy and ride ! I bet some of the dealer owners here would know a bit more than others. I think Suzuki and Kawasaki still make the 2-smoker 85. OR maybe thats just here in Canada.

the electric bikes are cool in ways.. but they still got some years to go until they can keep up with the rest.. the major problem with them is that if something happens to the bike, yes the company will replace it because they have a kick ass warranty, but what happens when your bike breaks down somewhere that is not easy to get to... well then that just sucks!! i kinda like the noise that the gas powered bikes make!

jeez why are we even talking about this? we just had an overhaul going from 2 stroke back to 2 stroke. then we got speed sensitive forks. then we got efi. and ktm MIGHT have direct injection on their 2010 250sx. what more do you need?
o and dont forget the 2 wheel drive bikes.
