I thought wheelies were just something to show off with. But the book I am reading now suggest practicing wheelies and stoppies as a regular exercise for crossing logs and bike control.
I have Shane Watts' Dirt Wise DVD and he says the same thing about wheelies - that they're a useful tool to learn balance and throttle control. I haven't tried a controlled wheelie yet, only the panic rev ones.

hahaha, well first off,. the best wheelies are pulled in canadia, never been there myself but i've been told it is nice  secondly this topic has probably already been answered twenty times, but my take, my bike is strong enough to just throttle wheelie, i just give it a lot of gas, and it will pull up in any gear if i have the traction. on smaller bikes you have to "pop" the clutch, that is rev it out, and drop the clutch so it suddenly has a lot of power being delivered to the rear tire. a lean back and a foot on the rear brake help.

my friend has a yz250 that had to have the engine rebuilt now its a 350cc two stroke now everytime u shift from first to second it pops a huge wheelie

even that is a stretch unfortunately. we pick up on this stuff, and we think no more of a bike if it is bored over anyway, a yz250 can bring it up in any gear, i've ridden one quite a bit, they are nice bikes and with bigger bikes they have enough power to lift the tire off the ground without anything more then a throttle roll.
