How will a cr 125 do in the Sand Dunes at Glamis if properly maintained? Will it push out enough power?

like i said before, you'd have to religiously maintain that bike. sand puts a lot of strain on an engine.... a bigger bike would be better, it is up to you and him whether or not y'all think he's ready to ride a bigger bike. like i mentioned to you, i'm 16. i ride a 250 2 stroke with no problems. i'm 6 foot one and 178 pounds. i jumped on that bike after a one year stint with a P.O.S. no named 150, might as well came from the same back ground your son has come from. in all seriousness i dislike recommending a big bike to a person learning, but with the dunes.. it is making me think a bit, a 125 if not religiously maintained will be put under a lot of stress, it might not last to long in the sand. a 250 2 stroke will do fine, but it is a big bike, talk it over, do you think he's ready?

Fast awnser.....No. Just not made for it! Even with Sprocket set up and paddle tires the engine will be way stressed to do it. Lot of wheel spin and high RPM's on a bike that has no bottom end to begin with.
Just my opinion.

I have been getting a lot of people that say the crf 230 or 250 would be great for him, im hoping to find some cheap on craigslist or something for him to start on, That bike should do well at glamis even tho its a 4 stroke?

The sand will be hard on any smaller bike becuase it will be revved to the max all the time because of wheel spin. A 250 four stroke is a small bike imo but it may handle the sand better because it has a wider powerband but if he has a 125 2 stroke allready its not worth swappin it for an equally powered bike. He may as well learn to drive the 125 well then move up to a 250 2st or 450 4st when ready and funds can allow it.
I recently tried my 2stroke 175 in the sand and I wasn't very impressed. Mind you I didn't have a paddle tire but I was constatly winding it out in 1st to 3rd and only really started to get usable traction in 4th but then I was going to fast to really do much in the small pit I was in.
This is just my opinion though. Theres many factors you need to take into consideration . I just think it's better to have a bigger bike and take it easy till your comfortable with it than have a small bike and ride the bag off it and blow it up.

I ran my 125 in the dunes last winter and it was no problem at all.

If you weigh more than 170lbs a 125 is really going to struggle in the dunes. But if you fit it's target weight range it should be fine. If all you ever plan on riding is sand dunes you will want more power soon after you figure out how to ride it right. Going to Glamis? Run a paddle, remove your mudflap, and get a shock cover.

In Glamis your gonna want a big bike. Your gonna want to go and do and see everything all day long and you want a bike that you will be able to ride the next day. 250 2-stroke will work along with the CRF250 and CRF450. Highly recommend not taking a little 4 stroke 230 out to the dunes!

some dealerships might carry some good used 250f's. if you could get proof of recent top end rebuild it would be best, especially when buying a used four stroke. this would include the cam shaft, cam chain, valves, piston, rings etc. if i could get that for a used 250f i'd feel a lot better about buying one.
